Yeah, I think he's spot on. Some of the newer superhero movies are fine, but ultimately not that interesting, and definitely a few steps removed from anything I'd call cinematic art.

I think MS started this conversation to divert attention away from the fact that his latest movie is barely getting a theatrical release. For a guy who champions cinema and the experience of cinema, it is a travesty that he didn't demand NF to give his film a wide theatrical release....

Pesci is getting great reviews for his performance.

Saw this yesterday, in a theater (It’s long, my ass still hurts) I think it’s a masterpiece, MS was totally on his game. Pesci is awesome, but almost everyone was. Great screenwriting. I’ll probably do a little review later, but go see it.
Edit: or watch it on Netflix, I don’t think there’s a real need to see it in a theater.

I just got back from seeing it this afternoon at a theater 80 miles away (the closest it was playing near me).
While I am not sure if I would consider it a masterpiece per se, I did enjoy it and didn't notice the length as I was mesmerized by the performances from all involved. In fact, my buddy leaned over during the end credits and exclaimed "Wow, that didn't seem like a 3-and-a-half-hour-film at all!" I concurred. I never once got ansy or looked at my watch. Plus my ass didn't hurt one bit. I dunno, perhaps the seats at the podunk cinema in Minden, NV were better?
I dunno if I could watch it on NF at home, though. While not grandiously cinematic like, say, Lawrence of Arabia or Master and Commander or Walkabout (i.e. films that need to be seen on the big screen, imho), I know that if I watched it at home I would pause it and get up whereas in the theater I was invested and engaged for the long haul.
But as already stated, the acting is bravura and the screenplay is tight. The pacing is wonderfully understated and flows at just the right tempo. Great score by Robbie Robertson and the way Scorsese used the music was really interesting, too.
The only disconcerting thing to me was some of the CG-enhanced de-aging. While not dwelling in the uncanny valley, it was definitely in uncanny gully territory. I found the DeNiro de-aging to be the most distracting. It didn't look like they did much CG work on Pesci. And Pacino's de-aging was slightly more naturalistic than DeNiro's. I am also not 100% sure how much they CG'd other actors as some of the work looked practical (the "Fat" Tony character and Bobby Cannavale's characters appeared to be the result of make-up and not computer trickery, but I'm not totally sure about that).
If you are a Scorsese fan and dig the work of DeNiro, Pacino, and Pesci, then this is a must-see for sure.

Released on Netflix today. Of course I liked it. But it felt like every other, gansta movie made. Would have liked to seen a different film making style vs the standard casino, good fellas feel.

Just dawned on me that 3.5 hours is a very nice edible length. Too long for smoking a bone out in the parking lot during coming attraction previews.

I dunno, man. I feel that is a poor analogy given that both Cash and Nelson came from the same era and worked in the same genre ("outlaw" country and old school, real country). Perhaps a better one would have been "Do you wish Johnny Cash made more of a Billy Ray Cyrus (or Toby Keith or Garth Brooks...) album?

I watched it last night. I have a bad habit of not turning a show off once I start. I feel that I've seen this movie before (with the same actors) a couple of times.
If you have the time, watch it, but you aren't missing anything if you don't.what's orange and looks good on hippies?

I found the de-aging on DeNiro to be extremely disconcerting. While not completely trapped in the uncanny valley, it was definitely stuck in an uncanny gully...
Apparently we aren't the only ones who felt it was wonky:

Yeah, they coulda just given him blue contacts and lots of makeup and a wig. Or, ya know, given another young actor a chance a la Deniro as a Vito Corleone and not a de-aged Marlon Brando (he wasn't a 300lb beast yet then).
Of course, this wasn't near as good as GF2.

Finally saw it
stuck in a hotel in Providence RI with time to kill
well done, could have used an editor with balls
and of the big 4 ( Scorsese, DeNiro Pesci, Pacino) Pacino is so fucking overrated.
he is always sooo Al Pacino
He needs to watch GF 1 & 2 and remember how to act
