Well after the encounters with older bucks did not pan out last night I pulled the trigger on a young buck who stood broadside 30 yards away in one of my shooting lanes. Just needed to end the deer hunting, put some meat in the freezer and give myself a couple weeks to look for elk. Definitely feel grateful and relieved to have some meat, young whitetail is prime table fare in my book. The big bucks will live on for now, and maybe we'll play the chess game again next season.

I worked all weekend. Heading out tomorrow in earnest. Hoping this bit of weather got some movement happening.

That’s what it’s all about in the end...good food.

A few pics from this morning. Sam, the 1.5 year old,had quite the coming out party on her second duck hunt. She and Judy (her older sister) alternated on retrieves and Sam ended up with a successful 100 yard blind on the very last bird, a wounded drake that sailed and swam. Pretty wild but that seems to be her M.O...the dumbest dog I’ve ever owned but a savant in the field. Here she is on one of 21 retrieves.

Man, I need to get a dog. Slow duck hunting down here right now, but I cut up 5 elk shanks and did osso bucco for 10 tonight with a polenta base. Braised for ~5 hours, fell off the bone. Amazing. Scraping out the marrow onto my girlfriends homemade sourdough at the end was otherworldly.

I cooked the Austrian Braised Shank recipe last weekend with a couple Mule Deer Shanks cut in half. Good Lord! So good, was just telling hunting buddy this weekend that shanks may be my favorite cut now.

This shank adulation should be kept quiet. Low cost cut, high flavor value across multiple species game and domesticated animals.

The frustration level is building. Only walked 6 miles today and found a pair of bull tracks cutting clear across from private to private. Otherwise nothing but old tracks from 4-5 days ago when it was winter. This mild weather really shut everything down. Gonna get my ass soaked tomorrow, but the thought is that actual rain/snow will get them out of their beds.

My thought was to bag it as well, but I gotta work rest of the week probably. Last time it rained I had a super close encounter at like 25 yds and just wasn't ready to shoot. I know forums are kinda whatever, but lots of people saying they shoot elk in the rain. As long as it's not a heavy rain they will be moving more than a warm/dry day when they just bed during daylight.

I don't know shit about shit, but from what I've seen it's gotta be pouring before they even think about giving a fuck. The silver lining to a steady rain is that it generally means fewer hunters, but it also means a greater chance I'm going to bust my ass skating down a spruce log.
