Got to do a duck hunt in Manhattan, Montucky yesterday. -13 at shooting time but we pounded mallards and even shot two roosters who flew by the blind. Good times.

    Off to Chukar Camp tomorrow.

Wasn't sure where to put this, but I just finished my first European Mount skull. You guys probably all done them before, feel free to skip . A lot of people pay to get this done, so I wondered if I could do it at home. It's pretty easy!

I usually see girls, so I was happy to get a boy this year.

I shot him at dawn on Saturday.

Skin and flesh out the skull, boil. I used a little borax and dawn dish soap in the brew to break up the grease. Boiled him about 3:30 to get everything released.

(pro tip, do this outside. Mrs Middle was not impressed by the smell when I started him inside)

I used a pressure washer to get all the remaining flesh off. Messy job, but the crows approved. Let him dry overnight in the boiler room.

I used a peroxide solution (?) from a hair supply shop, covered the surface and all the nooks and crannies in a nice layer of the stuff. Wore 1 latex glove to spread it around .. used my bare hand to hold the antlers to make sure I didn't screw up and get any peroxide on his rack.

Let him sit a day and a half, and here's how he looks now!

The peroxide is still finishing in a couple spots, but I'm so excited on how it came out. Not sure where to mount him yet, but probably in my workout room along with the other hides I've done. Fun project, a great way to remember the hunt. I'll be doing this again!

Cool man. Well done. I live euro mounts and have done a bunch myself. It helps to pit a few drops of dish soap in the water when boiling.

Nicely done on the euro mount! I'm gonna DIY euro my next one.

Wussed out on day 3 in a row today. Been chasing fresh tracks for two days. I'm beat and got a hot date tonight that I don't want to be a zombie for. Freshest tracks yesterday were from a big bull for sure. Buddy went back out today. I bet he will get a shot since I wussed out today.

Thanks! I fill the freezer and feed some of the local mags too. My work schedule will likely prevent me from getting a mule deer for a double header like last year.

The rifle is a 30-06 Browning A bolt with a dialed in Vortex Diamondback scope.

The same could be said for people that use too much Aquaseal.

Saw a really nice buck from my stand tonight. Unfortunately he did not show himself until about five minutes after legal shooting time. Heard him raking around in the pines and thought he was probably a 3 point who's been chasing does, but then he stepped out I was like whoa. Glassed him for a while. Pretty sure I've seen him the past couple years but he's a shooter now.

I had does all around, right under the stand, and had to wait an extra 20 minutes before I could climb down and sneak away. Amazingly none of the deer winded me, it was dead calm. Fun evening.

I find it inspiring that you honored the rules and passed on the buck. Easy to talk/write about and hard to do in the moment. The coyotes will have to wait on the gut pile.

Thanks. Ethics aside, a valuable lesson learned: Buy a damn watch. You can't expect to be digging your phone out of your pocket with a whitetail buck 30 yards away lol. Anyway...happy to see him, and maybe there's a bigger one out there. Rut is just getting going.

^this. It's all part of the hunt. Well done.

Super foggy, snowy, sleety this AM. Bumped a cow at like 15 yards it was so socked in about 7am. Would have definitely taken her down if she didn't hit the dense trees and disappear in milliseconds. 18 days in. I'm not holding out for a bull anymore. Time to get this over with and eat steaks and start skiing.
