i've "dated" an engineering, and also have some close friends who are of that such brain.
that pretty much explains it. ahh, as one would say.

The only thing people should be bitching about at this point is why they haven't given any more updates.
Investigation or not, those shit-fucks have just left us looking for more info. A picture? A press release? An eyewitness account? No, nothing.
Ultimate cock tease, I say!

As per Steamboat Springs new rope re-replacement due to vibrations, I find it very interesting that a rope can actually create cracks and breaks in installation structures due to the vibrations caused by the rope surface travelling over the sheaves.
(And maybe, purely speculating, that also had something to do with the replacement of bolts on the tower in Vail recently. Or maybe it was something else ... but it might be related, or not.)
A while back I posted that in BC a tower had developed a crack in the cross-beam, and I wondered how that could possibly happen. Perhaps it happens due to these types of undesirable vibrations while operating under load.
Back to Steamboat Springs ...
The variation in the lay of the 2007 rope didn’t allow the pairs of sheaves, or wheels, at each gondola tower to absorb the energy that can cause vibration. ... “The lay of the (2007) rope was such that it pushed the sheaves down simultaneously,” Allen said. “All that energy was going right into the axle.”
Well, according to rope manufacturer Radaelli, the actual amount of vibration is significant, and with using 7 strands instead of 6, the amount of undesirable vibrations can be cut in half.
The Radaelli PDF here describes this quite well and has stuff about sheaves ('Hauling Rope Interfaces") and a lot of otherwise good rope porn.
http://www.oitaf.org/ref/Grenoble%20...%20Clerici.pdf
So, I guess, the problem with the Steamboat rope had to do with these forces and a different rope lay and/or strands was specified to solve that.
A few other nuggets in that document:
All the ropes for hauling-carrying operation must have a fiber core in order to allow splices. Therefore the ropes must be produced with a single layer of strands over a core. The number of strands must be not less than 6 to allow the splice (with a lower number of strands, the core diameter would be smaller than those of the outer strand).
I'd never thought of that! It would be impossible to pass and bury the splice if there were 5 strands because the strand passed inside won't actually fit in the space provided. And since the splice would break the cores continuity, the 6 strand rope must not have a steel core. It must be just a 'core' and not part of the hauling tension.
Anyways, I hope that the PDF from Radaelli on that page is as interesting to you as it was to me.
Cheers!

Interesting twitter threads between individuals and media with @oplopanix.cs (SAR member in Squamish that also maintains a blog about stuff from being a SAR volunteer, team leader, manager, and mountain rescue expert.)

RCMP have confirmed that the cable to the Sea to Sky Gondola has been cut.
“The investigation to date has confirmed the preliminary assessment” reads a release from Squamish RCMP.
“Police have confirmed that the main cable was cut and that there are no other natural or mechanical reasons for the cable to have failed.”

Outrageous! It doesn’t sound like they even considered the possibility that laser sharks were involved.

I’ll believe it if PureGravity clears the report.
Dude’s a freak of nature with the research. CNN should hire him as a taking head for the next CableGate.

I'll take the compliment.
I guess that puts an end to my various and numerous unsupported and purely speculative theories.
Back to my regular work as a bio-robotics shark recombinant DNA breeding specialist in Beijing.
Thanks for all your patience - as my two mother tongues are Chinese and Russian and I only learned
English recently while on sabbatical from my international treaty research endeavours.
And if anyone wonders, WIND is very misunderstood
especially the role it plays in the distribution of specialize viruses
designed to carry DNA
payloads to gondola
guests overseas

...
I fully respeckt preliminary reports
especially those stating "that there are no other natural or mechanical reasons for the cable to have failed.”

RCMP UPDATE: Confirmed cut at Sea to Sky Gondola
The investigation into the Sea to Sky Gondola is active and ongoing.
The investigation to date has confirmed the preliminary assessment. Police have confirmed that the main cable was cut and that there are no other natural or mechanical reasons for the cable to have failed.
Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to call our dedicated tip line: 604-892-6122. Alternatively, anonymous tips can be provided through Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
To preserve the integrity of the investigation, no further details will be released.
Either the rope was fucking CUT
or it FAILED due to being cut by some mechanism in the lift system or by other means such as defect or fatigue etc..
If it was CUT, it was CUT.
So was it CUT?
Have independent, uninterested, non supply-chain related, forensics persons determined that it was CUT?
Then for GOD SAKE, just say what the forensics people said.
And then show some pictures.
Who doesn't like pictures?

Did you somehow not read this when it was posted earlier?
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...alls-1.5242787
Did you miss the part about multiple inspectors from WorkSafeBC and Technical Safety BC working on site with the RCMP, and they being THE experts who can easily determine if the cable were cut or failed due to other causes?
Yes, the cable was cut.
As for expecting to see pictures of the cut ends, I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for that. Those ends have been removed and are evidence. The police hardly ever make evidence like that public while an investigation is underway. There have to be things that only the police and the perp know about. Maybe you’ll get to see the evidence when the case goes to trial, if that ever happens.
