The next thing I remember I was at least 1/4 mile away, out of the woods and walking on a paved path on the other side of the road from the trail. Some family friends who lived in the neighborhood confirmed they heard thunder that afternoon and I vaguely recall a friend checking one of the sites that track strikes. GF at the time thought I just got abducted by aliens and probed but my ass never hurt.

The tinnitus was real for a while, now several years later it isn't bad but it kept me from sleeping well for months. Sometimes it kicks in though, not looking forward to getting older since it's supposed to get worse with age
Woah man, I don't think you've told me that one.

Good thing they didn't get your butthole. Tinnitus is temporary but a probing lasts foreverrrrr

I used to play soccer with a dude we called Boomer. He had been hit by lightning twice. Still functional to play pretty serious soccer. Crazy.

When I went to Philmont as a teenager we were given a lighting safety briefing and we kinda shrugged it off as we knew better than to be anywhere above treeline in the late afternoon during monsoon season in New Mexico. Halfway through the trek we were coming off an exposed peak in the early afternoon when a thunderstorm caught us by surprise. Bolt of lighting hit a tree not 100' away from us, which really kicked the descent into high gear. Everyone put their rain coat on, but only a few of us took the time to don rain pants. Short story long, the trail turned into a shin-deep creek and there were a whole lot of us huddled around the wood stove in the cabin of the staffed camp we were heading to for a food re-supply, drying socks and boots which had filled-up with water.

Apparently that didn't quite drive the danger home as a few days later we decided to go for an afternoon day-hike to see some of the more picturesque vistas along a popular ridgeline. Another storm came in but this time we had nowhere to seek cover so we spread ourselves out in a field of big talus, squatted down on our packs, placed our elbows on our knees and raised our hands above our heads. They claim that's to channel the strike to the ground without going through your vital organs, but I'm pretty sure it's just so you have one last chance to kiss your ass goodbye.

Between that and having to check under the seat of every outhouse for snakes & spiders I was pretty glad to be back in civilization when that trek ended.

Watching a storm out the back window and strike hit transformer in the alley. 60-80ft away. Thought the world was exploding, but that might have been the drugs.
