used beefcake trail bikes that dont suck

i want a trail bike to replace my well loved sx trail...

    about me:
    6'3'' 180lbs
ride hand heavy and like it that way
loves hucks to flat and big berms
    hates chunder
    half skilled half hack
    pnw terrain
grad student actively racking up debt

    it needs to be:
    able to handle 10ft drops
able to pedal up fire roads
long, slack, low, more the better
    steep sta
    progressive leverage curve
be found used cheap in an xl

    it cannot be:
a dentist brand (ibis, evil, pivot, intense, yeti)
    non piggyback shock
    skinnier than 35mm fork
    carbon
    linear leverage curve
    wagon wheeled

    what bike am i?

    looking at:
    patrol 2017 (better leverage ratio?)
patrol 2018 (sbg geo worth it?)
    scout
    gg stuff
    153
    134

other bikes that arent $$$ and dont suck?
giant? trance beefy enough last few years or reign needed?
nukeproof? i love my older solum dj frame but dont know their mtbs
    devincis look short
norco? dont know much about last few years
diamondback release was hot for a minute, those still good value? geo looks meh
canfield? banshee? idk much about these brands
anyone holding something in xl for cheap?

    some on my radar

Take a look at Knolly. Should be lots of used deliriums out there. Solid bike though geo isn't the longest/lowest/slackest unless you go for new which won't be as cheap.

I'd check out Commencal as well. Great bikes, and well-priced.

Commencal was my first thought as well.

If you're in the PNW finding a used patrol locally should be pretty easy, that's probably what I'd go with. You didn't say what your budget is but that new DB Mission looks great and a hell of a deal. It's a shame they ruined it by making it 27.5 though

I'm pretty sure he said it can't be a non-piggyback shock... which by the double negative rule, means he wants a piggyback shock. I think.

Same thing with the fork... can't be less than 35mm stanchions. Again, I think.

That would sure make more sense.
Second on the Patrol, i saw several used gen 1 alloys go for around $2000 ~ $2500 this spring.
The hard part will probably be finding an XL.

    This guy gets it
    130-160mm bike
    Beefcake fork and shock
    Steep seat tube
    Long reach
    Not plastic
Can be found used kinda cheap

Budget is 2k ish... depends what I find for my $
A solid frame to build off is the goal, not as concerned with drivetrain and will lace my own wheels after blowing up whatever ones come with
I don’t swap bikes often, hence still riding an 09 sx trail

Good frame geo for tall folk is priority, any other frames ahead of the trend and can be found cheap yet?

Used patrol is top of list, but looks like they changed up linkage 2016-17-18 and idk how or why exactly, 17 looks best on paper but why did they revert back to more linear curve in 18?

Knolly geo not great for tall folk as far as I’ve seen

Someone tell me more about commencal, don’t know them well at all, what model and years?

Here’s some beefcake bikes for ya. Not sure if they suck or not. You’ll have to figure that out for your self.

Check the links in my first post and you will find 2 patrols in xl
A 2017 with diamond and meh components for 2k
    A 2018 with nicer kit for 2900

Anyone good with linkage analysis? Looks like things changed from 16-17-18, I do not want a linear bike, I don’t want plush, I want lots of ramp up to avoid bottom out on flat landings

You got air shocks/spacers and compression damping for ramp these days. I wouldn't say that there are too many linear trail bikes out there at all these days. I'm on a yeti which from what everyone tells me its super linear, but it doesn't bottom when I huck to flat.

Where are you riding that involves setting your bike up for drops to flat?

New, if you can stretch the budget. Or frame only/build up.

Recently bought a used Megatrail for not much more than your budget. Seems to fit the bill.

New transition geometry is on point for tall guys, I would go with the sbg (2018) patrol or a gg mega trail. I bought an alloy gx sentinel for $2500 last fall so it can be done and it is awesome but does need a bigger shock spacer.

spacers and damping are bandaids to shit kinematics, ive got enough time on bikes to know what i like, linear aint it

its not so much where i ride, its how i ride, i like doing dumb shit on bikes, thats the fun part

It's $40 to demo a transition in bellingham and a mile from galbrith, go try one. I think Kona does too.

They probably have some loading docks out back to test out the progression.

In North America, the most common dock height is 48–52 inches (120–130 cm), though heights of up to 55 inches (140 cm) occur as well.

    That made me laugh.

The advice to pick 3-4 bikes you'll like and just wait it out on pinkbike is usually good.
