I figured this was the right place to ask! I had never heard of him before.

His motto was: "si tu tombes, tu meurs", translated as "you fall, you die"
He died on March 28, 1989, in a non-skiing related climbing accident as a result of a broken carabiner, while abseiling from the top of La Beaume Rouge, in France.

if you're going to have a motto, it's best to live and die by that motto.

Didn't Paul Ruff say "Dying ain't much of a living" --- and then came up short...... and died.

He was doing a Clint Eastwood impression for a ski film but ironically a year later he fulfilled that statement.

It reminds me of the old saying, "Careful what you ask for".

Something that is near the core of my situational awareness.

Broken carabiner...... i hate hearing sh*t like that. Makes me second guess my chosen recreational pursuits. We place a lot of faith in those things. I guess that’s why the notion of redundancy is so key in vmountaineering systems.
