    Athletic performance in your 40s?

    Compared to even 5 years ago, I'm dogshit at road biking. More precisely, it seems the amount of training needed to reach a given level of performance has increased dramatically, like 2x or more. I know all you guys are in your 20s and 30s so can't empathize, but one day you'll share my pain.

    Exponential decay. Going from 40s to 50s was at least double what it was going from 30s to 40s for me. I suspect that the fact that I quit smoking and put on 30 pounds is a big part of the suckage... Went from 5-8 and 140 to 5-8 and 170 in my 40s. I actually exercise more now than I did then,,, but nicotine is a hell of a drug and more junk food is worse than less junk food.

    make sure metabolism isn't broken by excess poor quality carb intake
    once metabolism is working, exercise will work betterly
    let feedback loop take you to health
    relax dietary restrictions to enjoy foodz, keep increasing exercise either via time or intensity

    acknowledged time sucks but there're way two many peeple crushing sports in their 50s and 60s to ignore the potential of the formula above

    I'm slower than I was 5 years ago. Turn 42 in a few weeks.
    I did score a bunch of goals playing organized league soccer for the first time in 20 years though. That was fun. I don't win as many races to the puck in hockey as I used to. Last season it dawned on me, yes, I am older than most of the other players on the ice. This past ski season there was a lot of snow, so I still jump off of some stuff, but not as much as 5 years ago, that's for damn sure.

    I think that for things like long distance running and biking, performance drops at a much slower rate than explosive activities like sprinting, or jumping.

    As to skiing I really didn't see much fall off unitl 45. Around 45 the (napolian dynomite) "cat like reflexes" and general rubber makeup (as in I just tended to bounce off shit) started to give way to awkardness and shit breaking (so far 2 full anterior shoulder dislocations, an ACL tear (100%), and this pacitor flacarias or some shit in my foot from running.

    I guess it's better than the heart attack and kidny stones my fat-ass neighbor complains about all the time but still. Not a day goes by that I don't miss the abandon, and the relative pain-less-ness that was youth.

    We're all getting older. It does suck though when you realize that you need to rethink your goals, strategy and timing. It's not that I don't still ski, ride or hike the same stuff, but my level of energy, aggressiveness and mind-set has changed a bit

    fifty five and too heavy and not a huge amount of exercise. This was the first season my knees hurt every time skiing. It wasn't awful and found it really easy to ski through the pain. At the end of the day, at home, I felt it. a lot

    tennis now is giving me sore wrists, knee and elbow

    it sucks, but you keep at it. dropping a few pounds would be good, but I love my sierra nevada and cheap red wine...

    Dude didn't even start training until he was 85. Start lifting heavy shit and sprinting, preferably yesterday, and don't stop until you're dead.

    This is true. I thought my 2000-3000 miles a year was good, but found out otherwise, the hard way. Mix it up with weights and steep hiking.

    OP, I feel your pain. I'm in my early 50s and everything takes more work. If I exercised like I currently am in my 30s, I would be KILLING it. Instead, I'm struggling to maintain.
