Seano where are you staying? We're planning a Maui trip too for next spring.

Anybody knows of a good VRBO they want to post a link to I'd be appreciative. Family of four.

In Kapalua, we stay at The Ironwoods. In Wailea, we stay at Wailea Beach Villas. Friends have stayed on the beach in Napili for reasonable rates

Thanks for all the recs guys, keep em coming! The only thing I splurged on (I’m a cheap bastard), is our rental car. I got a soft top Jeep Wrangler for the week for ~500, the kids will dig it!

Ululani’s Shave Ice In Lahaina is awesome. All sorts of house made syrups but try their NaKaOi combo (coconut, mango & liliko’i) mix with condensed milk.

If you’ve never tried shave ice, you’re in for a treat. If you have, Ululani’s is a step above the others.

The black rock also gets turtles , we saw a ton there

While you are driving, you should use an app called GyPSy maui drive. It basically gives you an entertaining tour/history lesson while you drive and has tons of local beta on viewing points and food places. Everyone who has used it raves about it

Lahaina is a cool town and there is a gallery in the bottom of Mick Fleetwood’s restaurant there that has amazing old photos of bands, Zep, CSN&Y, stones, Grateful Dead etc.

    ^Last week west of Kīpahulu

There’s a pretty cool prehistoric village site just past the end of makena road.

The kahanu national tropical botanical garden is pretty cool.

We encountered some pretty funky stuff in some pools at the base of a few popular waterfalls.

    Skiing and Snowboarding in Hawaii

Due to safety and environmental-impact issues and health
concerns, the Hawaii Ski Club no longer sponsors group ski trips to the
Mauna Kea volcano nor will we endorse or recommend travel agencies which
    may offer such trips.

Enclosed is our brief response to a television videographer who requested
ski club assistance in filming extreme skiing and snowboarding on the Big
    Island volcano:

Skiing or snowboarding on the top of the volcano is a very "iffy"
situation. For example, there was a brief "dusting" of snow on the
mountain top this week, but access to it was restricted due to high winds.
So even with snow, no one could ski/snowboard there. Add 13,000 ft
altitude with limited oxygen and there aren't many (if ANY) EXTREME skiers
or snowboarders who take the plunge. Plus the snow cover is rather small
so in previous years those who skied or snowboarded fast went quickly from
snow cover to lava rock and ended up being medivaced to a hospital with
    massive injuries!!!!

Another problem is that it is impossible to "schedule" a shoot of
skiing on the volcano. We've been trying to schedule this for years with
a NY Times reporter and other media. When the snow falls (generally in
late Jan through Feb) enough to accumulate a base and the
    government-controlled road is open, then it's a matter of "let's catch a
flight to Hilo NOW." There are no lifts or runs, so skiers also need to
hire a 4-wheel drive vehicle with driver who will drive skiers to the top
to mountain, then pick them up at the bottom of the run, return to the
top, etc. A full day of skiing the volcano can be 2 to 3 runs!!!! Skiers
need to provide their own equipment for skiing over the lava rocks since a
day of skiing the volcano destroys a pair of skis!!!

Due to overwhelming safety issues, the Hawaii Ski Club no longer offers
group ski trips to the Big Island volcano or will it endorse or recommend
    travel agencies who do so.

We went up Haleakalā two weeks ago. It was windy and crowded at the summit. We then went to the parking lot/look out area further down the road. There’s great access to the rim and views that’s protected from the winds. We had lunch there and had the whole place to ourselves for a while. Pants (or shorts) and sweatshirt were fine that day. Our crew was not all youthful that day (the elders were feeling the altitude) or we would have taken a long walk into the crater beyond the crowds.

After a 15 hour delay in Seattle because of a 6” snowmaggedon event... with a 6 month old... I made the mistake of having a 4 ounce rum and coke at 830am and Hasselhoffing into the ocean directly onto... into? A coral reef. Tore my big toe nail clean off and spent the next 14 days hearing about how stupid I was... am...

Go to Lahaina Harbor. Get on the glass bottom boat, a sunset cruise, or sail to Lanai and picnic at Black Manele.

Not necessarily a family outing, but for the more adventuresome trippers, I highly recommend going to haleakala during the full moon and spending the sunset, night, and sunrise at the glass octagon lookout. The people that show up are trippy mofos and there's going to be music and all kinds of shit going on. We were tripping balls and went over to the university of hawaii's observatory and shot laser light beams at the moon with them. In the sunrise and sunset, you can almost see haleakala's shadow projecting through space and onto the moon. My friends and I hiked out to the ocean near hana, at huialoha church, over the course of two days, staying at the cabin along the trail. Fuuuuck, you'll know you just hiked downhill for 10K when you hit the ocean.

While at Costco, buy several bottles of koloa dark rum. Drink on the rocks. Island candy in a bottle, made in Kauai
