    Weird old bike stuff

Stumbled across Charlie Kelly's website, and these pages are too good not to share.

I've been riding since about 1990, and other than the 2WD bike, I hadn't seen any of these bizarre contraptions before.

I worked on a few of those transbar bikes. Fucking garbage, but the rubes will buy anything if they think it will make it easier/faster (also see triathlete)

Hello, Charlie Kelly here, local business owner and cat enthusiast. Is your cat making too much noise all the time? Is your cat constantly stomping around driving you crazy? Is your cat clawing at your furnitures? Think there’s no answer? You’re so stupid! There is! Kitten Mittons. Finally, there is an elegant, comfortable mitten for cats…. I couldn’t hear anything! Is your cat one-legged? Is your cat fat, skinny, or an in-between? That doesn’t matter! Cause one size fits all! Kitten Mittons! You’ll be smitten! So come on down to Paddy’s Pub. We’re the hoooooooommee of the original Kitten Mittons. Meeeeeeeeeeowwwww!

    oh wait.

I have to make a longboard with big wheels and some kind of brake. Or, like, some kind of enormous strider bike that could get put on the bus bike rack and DH'd back to the bottom in a surfy way.

When I was living in Park City mid 80s I was working for the 4th of 4 bikes shops in town and the Transbar Salesman came in to push his product.

Since I didn't really give a shit I kept making fun of his product while he extolled their virtues to the manager. After about 20 minutes of my mocking he lost his cool, cursed me out and left.

Later I ran into buddies from Shops 1 & 3 and they reported similar interaction. Too bad, it was the future and we ruint(sic) it.

The 20" BMX jumping bike I rolled and flew in the mid 70s was weird by most standards through the 1990s. It's now quite similar to today's downhill bikes.. And I used it as a downhiller back in the day. Many of the other neighborhood kids had these too and our BMX track had the start at the top of a hill with the finish pit jump at the bottom of a gulley. Found another one, one year later model on eBay three years ago and had to pull the trigger and hang it in my shed. Tried to ride it but my 175 pound fat ass bottoms out the shocks designed for 80 pound groms LOL!

Super fun to fly down the hills and town home complex stair sets on the way to the stores. Bummer to push uphill for 2 miles back home. Lived on high ground back then..
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

    Yeah, no shit. :-)

The rear hub had a sort of emergency freewheel that was supposed to spin in case the chain got jammed. It didn’t. Downhill, high speed, in the rain, on a long sweeping corner, I was coasting, gaining speed, and shifted to the smallest cog, exactly what the system was designed to do. The chain jumped the cog and wedged between the cassette and the frame, locking up the whole system. Down I went. Still have scars 40 years later.

That bike could cause a lot of problems in my town where single file is sternly enforced ($250 fine or up to 5 days in jail).

These became fashionable for a while in the early 80s among the British time trial cognoscente after someone demolished the 100 mile record using them.

People would swear they felt better and eliminated dead spots.. ridiculous.
