Bike shorts for kids?!?
Did a quick search on this and nothing came up so looking for help.
5 yo is biking more and def want to encourage.
Right now next goal is to get off training wheels.
Last summer we did up to 3 mile rides around a local park loop with no problem. This year we bike down to the park and did just over 4 with the down and back recently. the problem is he got some sores on/in is butt from it.
Nothing more fun than a 5 yo wanting to show you his owie on his ass cheeks with a bonus brown eye... repeatedly
Any how, any advice from fellow parents?
DantheMan? KNow your sun was/is a bikeomaniac. Ass sores @ 5?
Al I see online are mini lycra shorts and that seems a bit much.
Help.

Mini lycra shorts with board shorts (swimsuit) on top. Done. Works great till they get older.

Could be a bike fit issue. If the saddle is not ideally positioned it could lead to pressure (too high) or friction (too far forward) etc. Also... I have one of those 5yo kid things... make sure the underwear fits, isn’t destroyed, and if cotton seams are an issue maybe use a swimsuit bottom?
Zoic makes kids mtb but I doubt for a 5yo ripper.

We bought him some nice TLD shorts this spring (https://shop.troyleedesigns.com/bike/youth), but most of the time he still chooses to ride in cutoff sweatpants. For what you're describing any kind of light and loose poly blend type shorts will be fine. And watch the underwear seams.
Problem may very well be the saddle.

My kids use Fox Ranger youth short which they are quite happy with. Normal looking bike shorts with a padded insert/liner.

Not intended as a literal critique of your ability to follow rulz or anything, just an observation (translated into sarcasm) that the amount of tech talk in Sprockets is quite extensive. You might find some of it useful, though given the search function, narrowing shorts discussion to kids-only is probably challenging. GL

This is the only source I found previously:

Bought the Request model for our daughter. Very nice. Probably nicer than most of my own bike shorts.
Also tried some random short from Amazon. Very thin padding, although still better than regular shorts.

How about not pushing him to ride until he has sores on his butt? 4 miles is a very long ride for a 5 year old still using training wheels.

didnt push, we rode down to park about 1/2 a mile then did laps at park at his pace, with breaks, and his decision each time to keep going . We did 2-3.5 miles often last summer with out the ride down ( bike in car)
he really enjoys it, where the dime size sores were I think it was shorts.
