These are yellow jackets. Spray shit is useless to get down into the nest which is usually about a foot or so underground. These damned things are second only to bald face hornets in terms of painful stings. We get them in the south all the time usually starting in August.

Kill them by waiting until night, then dumping about a pint of gas down the hole. No need for fire or matches, but that can enhance the fun. Here, too close to the house.

When I was a kid, we had an underground nest near the kitchen window. I went out one night, and stuck an M-80 down the hole (a real one). Stood back with a flashlight and watched them come streaming out of the hole. Little did I know they would fly to light. Got the shit stung out of me. In the morning, heard Mom screech, and Dad start yelling. They had come into the house via a crack in the window somewhere following the kitchen light. About 100 of the buggers in the house. Parental units not happy.

    Status report:

One entire extra-large can of RAID emptied directly into the entrance of the nest. First from the recommended 15 feet then progressively closer as the confidence grew until it sputtered out of accelerant.

Protective gear was worn then tossed aside as I heard their imaginary screams for mercy.

I located the gas line to the house and it is dangerously close to the nest so gas bombing then may not be an option.

When I left this morning it still reeked of RAID and victory outside the house. Dead silent.

I did swing home for lunch to behead the remains, if any.

Motherfucker if I didn’t see at least 5 of them lingering around the violated entrance to their misery pit.

I’ll reassess this evening. Possibly after cocktails.

Phew. You're ok. I do fear that you didn't eradicate the colony. The first skirmish only took down yj's on the perimeter defense.

Just before I ran to my friendly neighborhood ACE Hardware this evening I jammed the hose down the yellowjacket's front door and cranked it to 11.

I get to ACE where I'm treated to exactly the kind of advice I went there to find. Started off as one kindly old associate noticing my second purchase of wasp spray in as many days. That's all it took before I had an entire cadre of retiree hardware store part-timers surrounding me telling stories of what worked for them. Gasoline was indeed a favorite of a couple.

Surprisingly they all told me to use the glass bowl thing to which I responded by quickly retelling BC13's story. You've got some big fans at the Peachtree Battle ACE Hardware, BC13.

I thanked them for their advice and headed home only to find that I had no need for the glass bowl trick anymore. Every single damned wasp hole in the 20 feet surrounding the original one was now gurgling out tap water like a mini Yellowstone. Well, shit I said to myself as I noticed a yellowjacket buzz by the driveway as I was surveying the new swamp in my front beds.
