I havent read this whole thread but I went through this a few weekends ago at my neighbor’s beach place. The formula is pretty simple:

    (1) drink 3 cocktails
    (2) douse with some caustic shit
    (3) let sit overnight
    (4) next day drink 4 cocktails
    (5) have Blurred’s garden hose at the ready
    (6) fire
    (7) continually spray lighter fluid all over the place
    (8) rake the remains, if any
    (9) have a cocktail

That's all it took before I had an entire cadre of retiree hardware store part-timers surrounding me telling stories of what worked for them. Gasoline was indeed a favorite of a couple.

Surprisingly they all told me to use the glass bowl thing to which I responded by quickly retelling BC13's story. You've got some big fans at the Peachtree Battle ACE Hardware, BC13.

I thanked them for their advice and headed home only to find that I had no need for the glass bowl trick anymore. Every single damned wasp hole in the 20 feet surrounding the original one was now gurgling out tap water like a mini Yellowstone. Well, shit I said to myself as I noticed a yellowjacket buzz by the driveway as I was surveying the new swamp in my front beds.

Glad to read you drowned the bastards out. Hopefully, most of them failed to find the escape hatch during the flash flood.

We played speed quarters like it was our job in high school. One cup for every 2 participants. And if another cup catches you while you are bouncing your quarter in the first, you gotta drink. Lotta drinking in speed quarters.

This paper wasp bounced off of me while I was tending the grill last night. It then flew directly into a spider web. It was pretty cool watching the spider attack and ultimately kill it. I was too late to get the spider in the photo too.

The European bee-eater (Merops apiaster) is one of the species moving with climate change, traditionally breeding in Africa, southern and central Europe and East Asia -- they have reportedly bred in Nottinghamshire.

All things wasp includes this gem from WV.

    meth-alternative

    BOONE COUNTY, W.Va. —
Police in West Virginia are warning people about an alarming drug trend.

"We're seeing this here on the streets in Boone County," Sgt. Charles Sutphin told WCHS. "People are making a synthetic-type methamphetamine out of wasp spray."

Authorities believe at least three people overdosed last week because they used insect repellent to make a meth alternative.

"In my opinion, drugs are so bad around here. It's so available to people, and then all the time trying things new that we wouldn't even think about," resident Diana Ferguson said.

Stores in Boone County reported selling 30 cans of the spray last Friday.

Sutphin said the effects of using it are erratic behavior and extreme swelling and redness of the hands and feet.

"From what we're being told, if you use it, you know, you might use it one or twice and be fine, but the third time when your body hits that allergic reaction, it can kill you," Sutphin said. "It's a cheap fix, and you don't know what the overall result of their usage of this is going to be."

Authorities are working with poison control to determine the best treatment for someone using wasp spray as a drug.

A 2018 ABC News article details how insect spray is used to get high:

"The active ingredient in pesticides is a class of molecules known as pyrethroids, which penetrate the insect’s nervous system. In insects, pyrethroids stun, then kill. In humans, they block proper nerve signaling, causing abnormal sensation and, in the worst cases, seizures or even paralysis.

The spray also causes over-activation of of the sympathetic nervous system, which can lead to excitability, heart racing and difficulty breathing."

It was in the newspaper box under the mailbox. Forkers came out in force when I grabbed the paper last night. Wonder if the delivery person got stung.

Just had to do a second spray. As there were some still hanging around.

Dang. There are still a few hanging around the mail/paper box. Guess I didn't get it early enough.

Appears to be paper wasps. While not "nice", compared to yellowjackets they're pretty benign and easy to deal with.
