    Vail Gondola WTF

    Has this been posted already?

    What would cause this?
How do you fix it? Winch and new bolts?
I've never heard of this happening before....and there doesn't seem to be much info online.

Remember the incident on the Excalibur gondola at Blackcomb in 2008? That was caused by failure at the flange due to ice jacking (water got into the tube and expanded). Maybe something similar happened at Vail, but it didn't become evident until now?

edit: here's a story on the investigation findings for the Whistler incident: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...n-ice-1.903867

Wonder what that bucket and those other things are doing there. Was someone doing maintenance at that spot when it happened? Maybe was changing out some bolts, and loosened too many at the same time?

Perhaps someone got the righty tighty, lefty loosey thing mixed up?

    1. Ice jacking leading to metal fatigue

    2. Remove gondola cars from rope, remove rope from shivs (may need to do this at multiple towers to get enough slack), pull rope clear from tower, rig crane (heli or truck crane) to tower, lift, unbolt, inspect, reinstall if no repair is necessary
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

Assume bucket is there to hold parts by worker during maintenance?

There are reasons why there is not much information online.

That incident could have ended very very badly.

Which is why we are forced to assume that Vail Associates are complete assclowns with no regard for the safety of their clientele.

If only they would set the record straight

Guys, slow down. Some wild flower viewing tourists heard a baby mouse inside the lift tower scratching around, trying to get out. So the boys on the summer maintenance crew just loosened the bolts a touch in order to let the little fellow pass. Ain't no thang...

    last monday or tuesday
they were sending up the employees around 8am and shut the lift down and evacuated all of them one by one
vail was pretty silent when it came to why the needed to evacuate
guess there was a bump and one of the employees mentioned something
vail doesn't want anyone to think they have any problems with their operation

If you clowns would ever visit tech talk, you'd know some JB weld and some clamps overnight and it will be good as new.
