Not technically summer, but here’s our view of CRESTONE Needle Saturday night before we did the traverse….. From Lower South Colony Lake:

No worries, I didn't take it that way and have often wondered what the point of RTT's is myself.
The scenario you mention is a huge drawback of RTTs that a lot of people don't consider. It's even more a pain in the ass is if you've packed up for the day and decide later you want to take a nap. Now you're setting the tent back up. And you have a dilemma if you want to head out anywhere again before bedtime! Another drawback is losing your site while you're away. You could leave some gear behind like chairs or a table to save your spot but I've heard a few accounts of those disappearing. People seem to respect a tent more, maybe because someone could be inside it? So I've heard of RTT owners getting a cheap tent that they set up to hold their spot while they're away. Which makes their logic for using a RTT even more questionable.
My camper setup has the same drawbacks if I end up staying somewhere for a few days. But that doesn't happen often and I just live with it. Before I got the camper I used to sleep in a bivy sack next to the truck. Except when I'd show up late at night in shitty weather and/or have to get up real early, far too often I'd just sleep in the drivers seat. That doesn't happen very often anymore since the camper is so quick to set up and take down.

Looking at getting a camper again now that the little one is almost 2. We are thinking of a pop-up. One of the bigger ones with the wife comforts of a shower, bathroom, etc. anyone have any recent experience or recommendations?

Have done a couple trailwork weekends recently where we bikepack in to camp and work from there. I like that format for traildays. Full workday Saturday, hand pressed tacos and campfire that night and then half day of work Sunday. Then still have time for a ride Sunday evening if you want.
Drove up to LA Friday night, my secret campsite was free.
Once everyone was ready we rolled down the canyon and set up camp at one of the old trail camps that is right off the trail we'd be working on
After work it was swim time
Uninvited guest in camp was trying to join us for a swim. He was asked to leave but crawled into a hole underneath the table instead.
These guys have it down. Hand pressed carnitas tacos for dinner were the bomb

A few from a recent camping trip to southern UT, including Buckskin Gulch, the Grand Staircase, Vermillion Cliffs, Lake Powell and Glen Canyon.
We camped at Stateliness Campground on the AZ/UT border. The site is 10 miles up a dirt road and consists of 7 campsites. No water. I will say that out of all the sites that I have camped in CO., ID., UT and WY., this is my favorite place. Plenty of junipers and other trees for shade. Very quiet. Breathtaking.
We hiked the Buckskin Gulch and Wire Trails
Went to Lake Powell, but it was way too windy for our kayak and paddle board.
and felt like we were walking on the moon when exploring the Coral Sands near Kanab
