This has to be illegal - Ebay taxes
Just made a purchase on Egay and found out I owed and additional $57 dollars in tax! Tax! On used shit on Ebay! Fuckers keep reaching for the pocket. How is tax on a used item not double taxation? Also, if Ebay wasn't dead before, it's really gonna be dead now.
Watch the auctions you bid on. It should say you're liable for the tax in the shipping section if it is.

Well, that’s sucky...but just to play devil’s advocate, antique shops, pawn shops, used car sales all have to pay sales tax, too.

and used tool shops, shops that sell used musical instruments, used books, used clothing... most any actual business has to charge sales tax.
since eBay has decided to fuck over the garage sale sellers in favor of being a partner to the business sellers, they should act like a business. don't like sales tax? move to a state without one.

And never buy anything from a state that has one, which leaves a few options.

I've gotten taxed on eBay for at least a year now.. But, it's not on everything. I only get taxed when buying from a seller with a location in my same state. Some sellers have multiple locations. It's almost impossible to know in advance though until you get to the checkout stage.
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

NO worst than having to pay sales tax on every used car sale, can't even get the title and transfer work done without a bill of sale, a payment of the sales tax due for the deal.

It depends what you are selling. Amazon, facebook, craigslist, eBay, webforums all have slightly different cost/benefits/market niches.

Amazon doesn't really do small used bike parts, and none of the others have remotely the same amount of eyeballs as an item on eBay.

In a perfect world sales tax would be gone and we'd have mainly seriously progressive, minimal loophole income and wealth taxes. This is not a perfect world, in case you hadn't noticed.

if you want to sell a book or some other goods amazon has way more eyeballs and you can easily recoup the listing costs. If you want to sell certain really niche goods forums can have way more eyeballs that you want - where the decreased selling price goes with the lack of fees and the liquidity. If you want to sell something untransportable CL/FB can have way more eyeballs that you want and you can get a deal done quick. It's matching the good to the market to the sales channel aka "different cost/benefits/market niches." Anyways - go fuck yourself rideit - hope your quest for a pho place in Jackson Hole is going well.
edit: the wildcard can be eBay's sales promotions. An extra 10-20% in selling price from a BIN promotion covers over a bunch of flaws.

EBay has lost a bunch of Ebay Auto and Vehicle sales listings. Unless it is a rare, antique, or classic or something special for sale that a large national exposure, then people are not opting to pay the Ebay fees. Facebook Marketplace, and still Craigslist seem to be the highest quantity of listings. Regional or local sales also because of shipping fees and a few other reasons.
