This thread is disgusting because it persecutes a entire group of people based solely on religious beliefs. Period.
There is no persecution going on. Just insults. If the preacher man or the imam get to tell us that we're going straight to hell just because we might want to suck a little dick, then they get to hear from us when we think they're up to some sinister no good shit.

    When religion:

    A) functions as a system of control
    B) works to maintain one group's dominance over another
    C) is in any way inflicted upon those who want no part of it

it deserves all the insults it gets and more. Criticism, even in the form of vitriolic insults, doesn't qualify as "discrimination," "persecution," or even bigotry. Not even close.

The Buddhist establishment that supported the Japanese Imperial expansion that led to the murder and enslavement of 20-40 million people was evil.

The Catholic Church that has supported and profited from a colonial, genocidal project, and protected, countless child rapists has been and continues to be a sinister organization.

The Muslim leaders who would deny girls education and force them to marry their rapists deserve eternal torment.

On the other hand, if you want to avoid eating pork, turn the other cheek, fast every once in a while, mediate, pray, cut off a piece of your penis, hold hands and sing songs about how the meek are blessed and some dead hippy dude is going to come back to life, or wear any manner of funny hat or other accoutrement, then you should go for it. We've all got our things.

The pursuit of spiritual experiences and sharing communal beliefs are fundamental human practice. Nothing wrong with that. But enslavement, persecution and policing of thoughts are also fundamental human practices. I don't need to respect the latter group just because it is tied up with the former.

The Nazi's never claimed to 'love thy enemy', neither did Stalin, nor Mao Tse Tung. Nor did any of them spew more of the sweetly seductive lies that religions have in coopting the faiths they presumably represent.

The Nazi Party first developed in largely Catholic Munich, where many Catholics, lay and clerical, offered enthusiastic support. The Roman Catholic Church remained neutral throughout the war despite weak and watered down objections to Nazi's attempted wresting of Papal power. Any Roman Catholic objection to Nazi activity can be seen through the lens of control.

In the large, over the course of history, the Crusades, the issuance of fire and sword against the Netherlands, corrupt and perverted Popes, the Inquisition in Spain and all the atrocities carried out on New World cultures in the name of 'God' add up as only part of the totality. I can't begin to enumerate even some of the Islamic crimes against humanity. Nor the Hindus.

The thing that's the most heinous to me is the incredibly bald faced hypocrisy inherent to all religions.

Again, if people confuse their faith with a religion, they need to think more carefully.

Getting back to the o.p., yes, correlation isn't sufficient for causality, but more evidence is coming up.

Let's all try this on for size: skiers and snowboarders are stupid.

Now as a skier, I might have a momentary pang of defense. Harrumphs, hot snort, boot dig.

But on a secondary reflection, I'd have to agree with that statement.

    Most skiers are stupid.

    Most people are stupid.

Then I smile to myself and move along to dreaming of the next massive pow rail I hope to be slicing out somewhere on some high snowline with my pals. Who might be stupid too.

    Police abuses (all the time)
Schools ( yup, lots of perv teachers)
    Other religions (yup)
    Community clubs (yup)
Coaches of Olympic Athletes (yup - lots of abuses there).
The problem, I see it, is that it is actually expected in all those other forums
but ought to be not expected from people's claiming to be Spiritually Enlightened.
However, coming full circle, the spiritual enlightenment of Christianity is actually:
"We are fucked in the head, and heart, and need God's help".
So actually, it is not surprising then - because
    WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?
No one in this world has the abuse industry cornered.

What about the Romans? They had an entire school industry with the government and social and legal endorsement
of pedastery. Seriously effed. And that was the Roman Empire.
Fuck you to hell ya dumb retart.

Worse excuse for child rape I致e heard.

Huh. Did not come to the same conclusion as you when reading PGs post. Interesting.

Note at the end of his post he concludes that:

Not to put words in his mouth but I *think* he was saying that pedophilia etc. is effed and no organization is immune to those within their ranks (if not the organization itself) who commit such heinous acts not that he was excusing it. He was actually expanding on what you said.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

the structure was they weren't children retart - median age of first marriage for women was 20.2 years in 1959. How many do you think were under 18? Lorreta Lynn, coalminer's daughter, married at 15 in what she acknowledged was one of the most backwards parts of america.

    Religion is like a penis
    It’s OK have one, and
It’s OK to be proud of it.
It’s NOT OK to go waving it around in other peoples faces, and
It’s NOT OK to force it on children

    I'd say "no"

    faith
    /fāTH/

    noun

    1. complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
"this restores one's faith in politicians"

    synonyms: trust, belief, confidence, conviction, credence, reliance, dependence;

    2. strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

synonyms: religion, church, sect, denomination, persuasion, religious persuasion, religious belief, belief, code of belief, ideology, creed, teaching, dogma, doctrine
"she gave her life for her faith"

Then, of course, there is this:

Do you think you're being tricky here? No, Atheists believe (have faith in) the idea that there is no god. Always seemed to me to be exactly equivalent to religious faith. In both you believe something you do not know for a fact and which can not be proven.

The difference being mainly in the killing of non-believers, raping of children, and related ancillary bits.

Just as I don't think I need to conform with the non-conformists I don't think I need to believe what the non-believers believe.

re: Atheists believe (have faith in) the idea that there is no god.

How? How does one have faith that there is no god(s)?

So, what do athiests think made the physical world?

re: The difference being mainly in the killing of non-believers and raping children bits.

So atheiests don't do that, currently? historically speaking?

How about we also just lump that (the last question still standing) with killing of children (already born ones). Then what?

Another big difference is the levels of organization.

Religions tend to be very organized, atheists squabble incessantly and recognize no imam or papal tree.

Organizations become corrupt, atheists have a harder time getting money from other non believers, including those who believe there is no god.

It's never really been their main line of business. They've generally been more on the receiving end.

Are you saying that only atheists get abortions? You funny mang.
