There is rumor that he did actually surreptitiously drive a few laps of one of the cars entered but that were carrying cameras so weren't truly competing.

His son's documentary about the film is worth hunting out.

Agreed. The sound is important. Every time I went to a race, the first sign of a race car was the sound. Couldn't see it, but, it was there, howling, out of sight, as you parked. It was exciting.
Even when I was in Maranello. You could hear the test track as you walked around. Cool soundtrack.

The massive brake discs, pre carbon, glowed red hot through the wheels and thin bodywork. It was an amazing sight at 2am. Can't find a picture, hard to photograph pre digital. These cars:

The crowd was scarier than the Glen Bog bunch. They published some pictures of 80 in Hustler that were quite the scandal. Southern fans. Real trash.

Old school 935s were awesome, but Group C was the best. Derek Bell in a 956 with a real shifter and no chicanes..

I will never forget sitting outside the bar on Mulsanne having the wake of group c cars suck the beer up the side of your glass.

    Happy Father's Day memories.

Holy crap, 240 mph on the Mulsanne. Insane times. Seemed like a real beast to drive, too.

No wonder they put in chicanes.

Scientists now have decisive molecular evidence that humans and chimpanzees once had a common momma and that this lineage had previously split from monkeys.
