Oh, and I know you feel like you're under a time crunch and all, but seriously. You're not on an HGTV show like "Love It or List It" where those idiots always try to bang out some huge remodel in a weekend. Just laid the kitchen tile 5 minutes ago? No prob! "BRING IN THE APPLIANCES, GUYS!"

Yeah. Don't be like those guys. Do it right. Even if it is a flip.

Oh geez. That sucks. Didn't catch that detail. Might be time to ask the HOA for a temporary variance so his contractor can fix the job. Tell the HOA it's a fire hazard as is. That should sway them. Don't mention the other screw ups to them. Just focus on the safety aspect of it and how you don't want the entire community to burn down thanks to your idiot contractor.

Put a woodstove in front of it, centered. Carry that stone across. Run the stovepipe through the stone and up the chimney. Have the stovepipe make the angle from where it goes through the stone across to the flue behind the stone, in the current firebox. It'll all look nice and centered and like it's on purpose. You'll need a bigger hearth is all.

Fill in the firebox with the brick and go with the all-so-classy fake fireplace.

iceman’s idea is another good one. I would try and address it prior to listing. A mistake like that could plant a seed of doubt in a buyer, unfortunately. Perhaps fall back on the potential resale impact narrative to the HOA as you beg for permission to fix the mistake.

"Looks good from my house" still gets thrown around quite often.

Two of my brothers worked on a crew in San Diego building luxury townhouses. When something was fucked up, they were taught to staple up some chicken wire, spray it with stucco, and call it good.

Years later if we're trying to do something and it's all fucked up the line is, "get the chicken wire".

My first thought - Hang fireplace tools on the left side, and put a rack for wood in front of that. You now meant it to be asymmetrical

that's definitely a good low cost idea.

    This will center fireplace.
the firebox size will be slightly smaller, but since it is not insert should not matter.

add a layer or two of fire bricks to right side, where circle and arrow are in pic

add mantle and legs. legs will run edge to edge of firebox

since you added bricks to right side of firebox you will now be centered.....
    buy smaller harth...
even if gas comes from the right, a good mason can make this work , easy peasy

see purple pic for finished look

lots of cool contemporary mantles out there...googles

this whole project should be $1000 or less
but worth it, as that current situation looks like azz
