Its been mentioned before but you need a hearth. Where i am its 18"minimum to combustible mtls. As far as the proportions are concerned its definitely funky but its not a traditional mantle anyways so it fits the modern feng shui

Yeah. Not gonna lie. I don't think I've ever seen a design quite like this one. Only times I've seen a fireplace that goes right to the floor is when it was a legit stone floor with no combustibles anywhere nearby. Wood floors going right up to the insert?! Ruh roh!

Sounds like there's no building inspection past electrical and plumbing which isn't unusual, but any competent buyer's inspection will flag that.

Ok, this is not ok. So fix two birds with one stone. Add a flat stone hearth the same depth as the fireplace insert (from previous photos it looks like you should have 2" or so from the top of wood to the bottom of the insert.) However, you need to make the off center shit not look like an accident. So you are going to emphasize it. Have the hearth stick out about 18" (or whatever the code / insert manufacturer require, I can't remember) and run it all the way to the door threshold on the right. (this will look better if you rip out flooring so it can be sunk down lower, but should work either way.) Measure the distance between the right side of the insert and the plant shelf on the right. Then, on the left, stop the hearth that same distance you just measured past the left side of the insert. - so the mantle runs from about 20" left of the fireplace all the way right to the door threshold/wall.

It may look a little odd, but it'll look like it was done on purpose and like it has some design style.

And it might help your place not burn the fuck down.

The plan you posted doesn't look like what you ended up with there, but given that it says "existing fireplace to remain," I have to ask if the firebox was off center before the remodel? What were the existing conditions?

One possible solution (if possible): get rid of the side boxes, just have a uniform stone facade with the the fireplace. Then center the tv over the fireplace. It won't be centered on the wall but not sure it needs to be, or at least it won't look so obviously wrong.

edit: just saw that the TV is also in a box, so moving that too may be too much.

The TV was inlaid as well. It's all kinds of fucked up. But its Aspen, so the right fuck up may buy it if all the other factors are there. I say just have that area photo'd from an angle that doesnt highlight the issue and let people find it during walk thrus. Proactively hiding it makes it bad to worse.

My suggestion? Make the contractor rip it all back down to the studs. Fix all the core issues, fire safety and code (this is a biggie and you'll get screwed on this in a potential sale if you don't rectify it now before a buyer inspection ever happens) AND secondly the symmetry of it all. It's going to suck, but I don't see a better way. Contractor needs to own up to his mistakes. Heck, if he's partaking in the profit, then he REALLY needs to do it right and quit rushing things and doing such a hack job.
