OK here’s a pot story. It’s 1968 or ‘69. At my parents vacation house on McKenzie River (~2 miles downstream of west MRT trailhead). Next door neighbor, Hortencia Hart, comes over - 90 lbs of a chain smoking, bourbon drinking 80YO Oregon pioneer woman. She fished every day - lady could throw a fly like you wouldn’t believe. She plops herself on the floor in front of the fireplace, takes a pull off her ciggie and her bourbon and tells us this:

“So I’ve been wondering what all this talk about marijuana was about. So I called up Joanie (her neice and a social worker in Eugene) if she could get me some. About a week later I get a letter in the mail with no return address and two hand rolled cigarettes.

“I figured it was from Joanie so I lit the first one, smoked it down to a nub. I waited, and I waited, but nothing happened. So I smoked the other one. And I waited, and I waited. Still nothin so I said hell with it I’m just gonna go rake up some leaves.”

“What time was that ‘Tense?” I asked
“Three in the morning. After about an hour I got sleepy so I went to bed”

About a year later I ran into her while fishing. I pulled a joint out of my pocket and asked her if she would like to try marijuana again. “I would” she said. “Been hoping someone would offer”.

“Even though you didn’t feel anything?”

“Well maybe I did feel somethin’“

From then on I would bring her some when I visited, until her daughter moved her to CT.

I always think of ‘Tense when I hear John Prine sing “illegal smile”

Went to a wedding Saturday night sober.
Ended up hanging outside talking to the smokers and few other sober people.
Its definitely a different experience than getting wasted jumping around on the dancefloor.
Sunday I was happy to only be tired and not physically destroyed like I usually am.
We will see how this sobriety thing works out.

Seems like the best I can do is make sure they're as innocuous as possible. They'll never go away, just change form.

Isn't this what coffee shops are for?

I just mentioned to my wife recently that I think it's time for men's clubs to come back. Remember a few decades ago when men would go to the Elks Lodge, the VFW, etc. and shoot the shit with the guys a couple nights a week?

How many coffee shops have juke boxes, pool tables, dart boards, karaoke machines, or trivia nights? All the things that make life worth living.

Dave and Busters today. What's funny is we spend our entire parenting careers telling our kids how to grow up and be responsible and that alcohol is reserved for responsible adults. However, then main thing alcohol does is make the user feel and act like a child the more they imbibe. Sloppy drunk adults are just big toddlers LOL

I was curious in 2010/early 2011. Now over 8 years without a drop or puff and I have zero desire to go back. If I go to a bar now it's to a place with good food or good music. Eat, laugh with friends, watch people turn into assholes/idiots, then go home and wake up in the AM feeling like a million bucks. Don't know why I ever did it any other way.

If you ski Purg, you can relieve those heady days after apres ski. With an O2 bar, who needs that plebeian beer.

    Interesting thread

So here I am. Early Sunday morning. And I know. I need to get sober again. I’m not right now. Oh my god. My life what’s left of it is a dumpster fire. But fuck you stand 10 feet away you would not know

Sorry to hear this. Reaching out is a positive step in the right direction. I know for me life is way easier without alcohol. I think you know this also. Is a month in rehab an option for you? I’m not one to suggest AA but it has worked for a shit-ton of people. Don’t give up hope. You need help, I wish there was more I could offer you. If someone starts a go fund to get you into a good rehab, I would absolutely kick down.
