bummer. Dude was a true original. He basically saved Anders Osborne's life helping him away from addiction. New Orleans ain't gonna be quite the same next time...

Saw him on acid at the old Fillmore East doing that Gris Gris thing in costume. It was weird.

A couple years ago I saw a cool video of Dr. John showing a reporter around "his" New Orleans but damn if I can find it now. RIP to a true original.

Was within spitting distance of him at jazz fest in New Orleans back like 20y ago. Waited all morning so that I could get up front for his set. What an entertainer! rip...
Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
    Cletus: Duly noted.

Really interesting that this was the first recommended one after:

Not to derail, but so many insights into what life was like when I grew up in media.

    The common wit was real.

And this next? Youtube is a wormhole:

Guy had a cooler real name than his stage name.
Mac Rebennack. Well, as long as you don't call him Malcolm.

Fresh Air replayed an '86 interview with him, check it out in podcast land. Good stuff. His aspirations were to be a great guitar player, but had the tip of one finger shot off in a dispute with a thug with a gun.

Only saw him once when he showed up at a Garcia/Kahn show.
