    Mass Snake ID

Black Rat Snake....common here in PA.....we get a guy every year to do a PA reptile and amphibian show for the elementary kids.....he always shows a Black Rat snake....pretty docile....where as the Black Racer is much more aggressive, active.

Black Rat is good to have around the property....will control the mice/rodent pests around the house.

Yeah they just call them Black Snakes around here. Pretty common. But they're usually pretty much black from what I've seen, and this guy looks kinda brownish-black with a faint pattern. But hell I don't know.

Huh.... when I saw this thread title I thought "Snake River Idaho" and that you found a mass of snakes.

Goes to show, where you stand depends on where you sit and I sit close to the Idaho border along the Snake river.

this one seems to be a rat...

i always thought they were the aggressive ones and the racers were docile. a couple of years ago i was waiting for the metro north in beacon and there was one pretending to 'rattle' its tail at all of the commuters in a threatening way. i guess if it bit you it would pinch but not do much more than leave a mark.

Ah, the rat snake is also an amazing climber, sometimes they just chill on the side of trees. Cool to see.

An old girlfriend of mine was from Missouri and when she was a kid she fell through the surface of a riverbank into a den of copperheads. It was winter and cold out and they were pretty much immobile and she was fine.

You want snake stories, I've got snake stories... well, my family from Texas has snake stories like being chased by a water moccasin while swimming in a river <shudder> and coming across a live rattler with 21 rattles (I've seen the rattle).

I was taking a bath once as a teenager (no shower in our house) and I heard a strange noise. It was an old farmhouse in disrepair with exposed beams. The noise was a five foot long milk snake slithering out of one knot hole, along the beams and into another knot hole on a different beam. WTFF?!?!?! "There's snakes in the fucking walls!!!"

The black racers are aptly named. Saw one once and I don't think I could have outrun it thru the woods.
