we had our after grad at Capilano gardens I think some of my HS buds trashed the place and then we went terrorizing the local suburb of nrorth Van in a hot car with no muffler at 8 in the morning
I left Vangroovy 22 yars ago to escape a marriage that was done but the place is a fucking zoo, so take rapid transit if you visit,
mom died a few yars ago and she made the best AZN food this side of Singapore nothing else is worth even sampling so going to Singapore next feb
if you do live in Vangroovy ... get out while you still canLast edited by XXX-er; 05-30-2019 at 06:57 PM.

Not true, one of my favorite Italian restaurants is close to Swans and definitely not garbage. Cool little Tapas restaurant in the heart of the tourist district always brings us back for the good food and ambiance. Great farm to table spot right across the street from the Magnolia and on and on.

Hey I saw this thread pop up today and figured why not post my question...
Looks like I have a decent shot at a PhD at UBC potentially on the horizon in the next year. I'm American, currently in the PNW. I make in the low 20s currently finishing a master's at a much smaller (and cheaper relatively speaking) college town and have struggled way harder than expected. Research program at UBC is not of question. I understand the biking, outdoors, beautiful city, etc. advantages of B.C. Only major consideration of concern is unfortunately cost of living. Sounds like the salary would be close to 30,000 (cdn?) a year. Would this be absolutely insane to try living on? Not that academically strong programs on the west coast U.S. are any better for living (i.e. Seattle, anywhere in California)...

Not a chance you could live off that in most US cities let alone Vancouver.

Vancouver and Victoria must do's
All these naysayers. Of course you could live on that, just depends on how budget you're willing to go. I had a buddy that went to School of Design when it was in Santa Monica in the early nineties. Not cheap and he had nooooo monies. He rigged up his assigned design desk w a stealth sleep pod underneath which was his bedroom for three years. He even banged girls there. Quite impressive on a number of levels. No room for bike storage though if that's what you're after.

Vancouver would kick the shit out of Corvallis in terms of everything. Maybe talk to a few PHD candidates in Vancouver. I don't know how long the program is but living in Vancouver for a determined amount of the on low budget wouldn't be the worst thing and I would think you could always do a little wealthy cougar hunting there to improve your life style. I always thought dating for free meals and a nice place to sleep was a requirement for grad students.

UBC Okanagan might be doable on that stipend with an odd job or two, and still have something left over to have a bit fo fun. Not sure what they offer for PhD’s though.

$30,000 in Vancouver might be doable but the quality of life would be abysmal. A TA job plus some pt work to bring it up to $50,000 would be much more palatable. BCMtnHound's suggestion to check out UBC Okanagan is a good idea as Kelowna could be slightly cheaper and has all the outdoor stuff.

Yeah, looks like UBC in Vancouver is the only option. I'm currently TAing although it sounds like the American system is different (RA or TA for stipend + tuition remission). Canada sounds like you have to pay tuition, but if you get a TA position on top of the RA you get paid on top of that. Plus free (?) health insurance. I need to look into the logistics more w/ Canada if this moves forward.
Ha! And yeah program is 5yrs. I have student contacts, but I'm always a little skeptical with other grad students advice...it's nice getting some other outside perspectives.
Ha! I like your enthusiasm! For sure if this moved forward I would seriously consider it. I've scraped by for this long so far.
100% agreed, but even at an Ivy League school in [pick your city] you're looking at ~$32k for a PhD stipend.
Also thanks everyone for your feedback so far!

My first thought was $15/hr?? That’s pretty low for someone with a graduate degree. But then realized you’re talking about an TA or RA stipend. Well, yeah, that’s what student loans are for.
Hope you are getting a degree in a field that pays well. If that is the case, then it makes sense to consider the long term consequences rather than just short term costs. A degree from a better school will be more valuable to you, because it will lead to higher paying job opportunities which will affect your income for the rest of your life.

Assuming you are American you might also check whether you can work in Canada. I imagine there is some provisions for grad students to work on campus but outside of that there may be a problem. Certainly that is the case for foreign students studying in the US.
You will pay for BC Medical insurance but it is cheap @ $37.50 a month.

Well aware of all of this. I've been in the academic sector for awhile and already have made up my mind regarding the PhD track. I will still apply for other programs to compare regardless. My main question here though, without going into program specifics (or the is a grad degree worth it philosophical debate) is is it even remotely possible to live in said city on grad stipend? Well aware of the financial scraping, but like is this even conceivable, and/or would it be even somewhat enjoyable?

In my very white narthern town we got a visible influx of south AZN college students working at the food stores like safeway so it must be possible to work which is great because businesses can't find low paid retail serving or kitchen staff
Besides finding any place to live in vangroovy close to UBC might be pretty hard, probably be a long commute from east van or burnaby and did I mention how much the traffic sucks,
the rapid transit is pretty awesume thoLast edited by XXX-er; 06-01-2019 at 10:10 AM.

Conceivable - yes. Possible - maybe. Somewhat enjoyable - no.

Should be doable. There must be hundreds of other people at UBC in similar roles with similar pay who are pulling it off. Might need to find roommates to reduce living costs and consider going without a car. A nice thing about Vancouver is it is easy to get around on public transportation. Having a car is nice but not needed.

Roommates?!! I think I saw a news report a couple years ago of advertisements for student to rent small walk-in closets for something like $600Cnd/mo. And there was a waiting list for applicants.
Far cry from my roomy bachelor pad in Strathcona, just a block from the Strath (cheap draft beer) and the farmers market (Ukrainian preserves and baking for cheap), 10min bike ride to class, for $300/mo (heat included) in Edmonton in the early 90’s. I looked at that old apartment building a year or two ago for shits and giggles, and I think it was close to $1800/mo now. Pics look like it hadn’t received any upgrades since I lived there.
