According to one news source it didn’t happen there, it happened in a much more remote place. Breaking Bad territory. This is where they pinned his trailer, not sure if they got it right:

I met him a few years ago when he came to Mission Ridge. He was taking part in a camp/course of some sort. He was pimping H2O and his skis and gear. Seemed a bit indifferent about the whole thing. Kind of odd, he didn’t seem stoked that’s for sure. Sad.

Somebody has to do an in depth story about this. It's definitely worthy of a several page article in Outside or some sort of similar publication.

I don't read ski magazines anymore but if theres a really good article on this story I'd grab a copy. this isn't your run of the mill "bro's go ski and explore uncharted territory with other bro's" generic and played out junk that I've grown tired of.

I find it interesting that Deans story basically ends in New Mexico. The New Mexico weird factor is definitely in play here.
