I've told this story before, but it never gets old. Several years ago we had dinner with AC's very Mormon brother and his wife. The had just returned from a Caribbean cruise and we were talking about their trip. At some point we asked what their favorite island was, to which her brother responded "Puerto Rico, because it's basically America and you can eat at Chili's and Baskins Robbins and stuff."

I'm not sure I'm that magnanimous.

I agree that challenging oneself is healthy, even essential, but my personal challenges sometimes amount to getting up in the morning to get my kid to school or skinning up some stupid peak to satiate my appetite for self indulgent skifiending, On the other hand, I am proud of having done stuff to facilitate Bill Gates making billions and maybe even making life easier for billions of people.

At least someone's willing to say something genuine rather than opt for the decades-old routine of auto-reply emotional handies. Stop doing what doesn't work.

Guy Ritchie & dunfree get it. External influences drive you into the ground so you need to look within to both define and pursue what's of meaning to you. Could be to make a garden for all I know. It's not a judgement on money or status - only on fulfillment. Often times the monetary compulsions are manifestations of external expectations bleeding into ones identity.

If narrative is rooted in this dynamic and narrative is one of the few things that has persisted for millenia as seemingly powerful institutions have disintegrated, perhaps there's something to be learned?

Where the hell do you go to get ears cleaned? Sounds like a good opportunity for strips malls.

Other than the Delhi ear wallahs, I've never had the pleasure in the overly litigioUSA. The Wallah's skills were so out standing they were able to remove unimaginable mountains of gack from my ears. It would almost be worth another trip to the subcontinent for the pleasure of repeating that experience

I used to care about Guy Ritchie when he could still make a decent movie but things changed.

I lifted my phrase from the title of a good book by William Finnegan, which was also his term for his surf-only days https://www.amazon.com/Barbarian-Day.../dp/0143109391

If you have a functioning ear drum, where is all this gunk from a cleaning coming from?

I've never heard of professional ear cleaning until today.
