A complete ban is a terrible idea imo. If you have a picture of someone who has committed a crime, or may have done so, of course you should be able to check to see if you know who it is by running that image through the recognition software.

But banning indiscriminate use (the way it's being implemented in China) which runs everyone through the software as they come into camera view, seems reasonable and probably wise.

I assume a camera is watching me most anywhere I go now. So many cameras at houses now I don't stop to look at interesting architecture for very long lest something goes missing and they tell the popo I lingered outside their house too long. City streets and stores, I know BB is always watching. I am setting up a cloud based surveillance system around my place over the summer. Spending more time traveling and want to keep an eye on things.

Catching criminals, watching for known trouble makers is good?

The parody thread would be "San Francisco bans fecal recognition tech use by police".

Is there a way to find that match without scanning everyone who comes into view?

I was talking about using it to figure out who someone is, rather than using it to figure out where they are at a particular time (i.e. searching for them by using it). To try to figure out who they are they would run their image scan past a database of previously captured face scans and look for a match.

But it happens that my good friend Doug (RIP Doug) was a pioneer in this field and as he explained it, they reduce faces to algorithms based on the distances between facial features and thus come up with a unique number for each person. So they can scan everybody and only note when a match occurs and thus be able find the person and still not know who everybody else is. But as he noted, nobody trusts them (or their clients) to only do that.

Yeah, I don't even want them to do that.

Brief snippet but it sounds like they're talking about use of active-FR (scanning gen-pop real time) as opposed to passive analysis of a suspect picture against a database. Also the ban doesn't apply to Federal land at airports & ports.

I read “fecal recognition” in the title. Didn’t realize I misread it till I opened it.
