    build your own... cocktails

    Evil genius chemist?
    Disturbed bar patron?
    Cocktail curious?

    Welcome!

On occasion I grab randoms off the shelf and mix. Results are highly variable, often damn near undrinkable (but has that stopped any of you?), with the occasional hit.

What creative cocktail concoctions have you come up with?

I'm currently experimenting with "vinegar and oil":

    Two splashes St. Germain
One splash absinthe (Port Chilkoot Green Siren)
5 count vodka (Costo - American)
To taste: loganberry liquor (Clear Creek)
    Ice
    Mix and sip

The liquor has a greater density so will settle on the bottom - hence "oil and vinegar"

    Best cocktail I've ever had?
No, but worth having another - might need some tweaking.
    Egg whites might be interesting.
Tried it with Chartreuse in place of St. Germain - seemed the sweetness of the latter was an improvement

Not into "wasting" liquor, well then a tried and true Manhattan in my house is:
    In a shaker over ice
Bitters to taste: Abbott's (I'm heavy on bitters)
    Splash of Grand Marnier
1 oz sweet vermouth (or 0.5 sweet and 0.5 dry vermouth for a "perfect Manhattan")
    1.5 Whiskey (rye is preferable)
Shake, pour, (if you have a Trader Joe's sweetened, dried orange slice add it here) enjoy.

Post up what cocktail monsters or gems you've created!

Good vodka, a small splash of Tia Maria (kahlua will do in a pinch) chill well and strain into a martini glass. the "Refreshing Cocktail". I was tending bar years ago and a customer introduced it to me, she made it up and named it. Damn good.

I will say, in the spirit of the thread
    (that's a pun)
I do have a bartending license
    (from a couple decades ago)
and I was impressed how good a Harvey Wallbanger is.
But yeah, generally not a fan of mixing my fine spirits.
Maybe one, especially if served at a friends place etc.

came up with a couple tonight in the bar...

    2oz Dobel Diamante
    1/4 oz agave nectar
    3 dashes of orange bitters
Stir the piss out of it
Strain into a coupe, garnish with a orange twist.. boom = white old fashioned

....I didn't create the drink.. heard about it and gave it a shot, people were pretty happy about it. Putting it on our menu

I've also been soaking some mezcal in some cocktail cherries for a couple of weeks..

I'm going to make a mezcal version of an old fashioned soon with that stuff and some anejo tequila. Should be solid.

One of my favorite drinks was a total fridge rummage sale.. Muddled blackberries and cherries, 2oz? of mezcal, 1/2oz? of lime juice, shake the piss out of the drink and strain over ice....so good. was pretty buzzed and don't remember the portions but it was great.
    is this thing on?

I fully understand not wanting to mix fine spirits, have some scotches that likely won't even see a splash of water, let alone a cube (or be given to someone who can't appreciate good scotch).
But damn I love a good cocktail and make a habit of trying to devise new (to me) ones on occasion. I figure with the billions of people on earth, at least ten of them are on tgr and two of those are likely to enjoy trying to create cocktails, so maybe me and ice round it out?

    Short pour (8 oz.) of hazy new england ipa;
    splash of genepe;
    3 muddled mushroom stems.

Strain, and enjoy on a couple of cubes.

    Signed,

I'm more of a beer guy, but cocktails are fun. If you have a half-assed bar at home and can create some unique drinks that's super fun. Working at a margarita bar with a solid selection of bottles behind you is even more fun!

I’m with you. The good bourbon and scotch is neat only. I have lower end bourbon, and other misc booze for cocktails. I’m currently mostly drinking cocktails that I barrel aged; Manhattan or vieux carre. My last 3l batch of VC just finished. Recipe:

    Ingredients
    1/2 teaspoon Benedictine
    1 dash Peychaud’s Bitters
    1 dash Angostura Bitters
    3/4 ounce rye whiskey
    3/4 ounce cognac
    3/4 ounce sweet vermouth

Now that it’s summer, vodka martinis and gin and tonics are back in. I really want to do a barrel aged gin cocktail next. Not sure what yet though. A barrel of Martinez May be what I need http://www.fewspirits.com/barrel-gin...ied=7f73bfcd3b

    1 fresh squeezed lime
    1 shot grand mariner
    2oz simple syrup
    Handful of ice
    Place in blender.
Pour into glass. Add a floater of 1942 or DJ Anejo

    Perfect Manhattan:
    3 shots rendezvous rye
    1/2 shot sweet vermouth
    1/2 shot dry vermouth
    A dash of bitters
    1luxardo maraschino cherry
Shaken in ice. Pour with strainer... no ice in glass

Who said anything about "fine" spirits? A cocktail is how you hide the shittiness of the shit spirits.

Concoction I like to call "piss Wasser:"
Standard red bull and vodka but no ice

    Bull Hunter:
    Red Bull and Jaegermeister
This was actually better when I could get this red bull imitation that came in a rocket bottle from the convenience store and buy a shooter of Jaeger for 1 euro and dump it in before gettign on the bus.

this club I used to go to called AKW (ah kah Veh) Autonom Kulturzentrum Wuerzburg I think had a deal they called a master blaster:

    Good bit of OJ
    Champagne
    double pour of vodka
    red bull
    Jaeger
over ice in a 1/2 litre glass

no need chiming in to tell me that red bull is gross. I already know that, that's why you gotta put booze in it.

That first one's a little weird, but I make the exact same Perfect M only with Tillen Farms Bada Bings. Did a taste comparison with this recipe using 5 different ryes and Rendezvous was the run away winner.

I'm not brave/creative/knowledgable enough to go crazy with ingredients, mostly just refine the classics. Primary winter cocktail is a stripped down Old Fashioned:
    3 Oz Rye
    splash of Grand Marnier
    splash of bitters
3 orange Cara Cara orange peels
    2 premium cherries
    3 ice cubes
    NO sugar/syrup
    NO muddling

    Mezcal Paloma
1.5 mezcal (I like Peloton de la Muerte)
    2 grapefruit juice
    1 lime juice
    Agave syrup to taste
Shake with ice, add a splash of soda water after shaking, pour into a Collins glass over ice

Oh, right, sorry, I forgot how this thread immediately became limited to, despite teh OP, "finest version of a traditional cocktail that you got." I'll post up my next fucking gin martini. And pocket rockets are teh bomb!

I love my Solly Lab Pocket Rockets

Came up with a new one last night:

Store was out of White Rock tonic so I got conned into buying the good shit -Fever Tree at 7 bucks a 4-pack. Get home and after 3 hours I get everyone settled and finally some peace and quiet to myself.

    I poured:

    5oz of Beefeater
3/4 bottle, or $1.32, of Fever Tree Indian Tonic
    Three-finger-pinch sized wedge of thin-skinned, just-ripe lime
Over 3, 2” cubes of perfectly-clear ice in a leaded-crystal high ball glass

Gently stir as not to lose any carbonation from the tonic, and then throw it all over the fucking place, ensuring to shatter the glass and wake every living thing in the house as you try and navigate the perfectly clear, obstacle-free 10 foot path from the kitchen to the deck.

    I call it the Piotrowski.
I still call it The Jake.

As a young lad, I was once attending a keg party and, in an attempt to class up the joint, I made screwdrivers....using Smirnoff and orange MD 20/20.

I would not recommend this particular recipe.
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

    That’s a fighting drink.

I usually just experiment with bourbon, ice, bitters, and a tiny bit of something to add character.
    - honey and lemon juice
    - fernet
    - muddled pear
    - herbs and simple syrup
    - etc

I didn't invent this, but I am keeping it alive- a defunct local bar invented it and I seem to be the only one who remembers it- it's my favorite "martini"-

The Brass Knuckle: 2 shots gin, splash of Grand Marnier, lime wedge, in a martini glass. Has a cool "brass" color and tastes great!

    like that
Having a ton of fun putting Mezcal where whisky could be in cocktails
Old Fashioned, manhattans, in general it makes things interesting

old fav I make a lot at home but rarely drink when out as I hate the name and ordering it is a Boulvadier
    3 parts Rye (or bourbon)
    2 parts Vermouth
    1 part Campari.
    Negroni with Whisky basically.

    Also Gin and Sweet vermouth
    Martinez

Bitters of different sorts make both above interesting as well

Hope Tipp chimes in, that boy can MAKE A FKN COCKTAIL

Bragg cider vinegar makes great whiskey cocktails. Whiskey of choice, ginger syrup and some Bragg was a big hit a party awhile back.
