Nevada City, Truckee, Reno...
Going to be coming back from Butte Meadows CA in early June, driving back to SLC on a weekend. Looking to spend a night somewhere within ~2 hrs of there, but vaguely on the way back to SLC, with some decent beer/food/etc... is Nevada City worth visiting? Truckee? Just suck it up and go to Reno?
This will be after one in our group has done a 50k race so not really looking for anything outdoorsy, just good food/drink density, decent hotel options... also bringing a dog.
Anyone have any opinions on best options, lesser-known but worthy stops in this area?

Either Ike's or South Pine are great breakfast/lunch spots in NC. That's all I got

The drive will be longer through nv city and Truckee versus via 395. I think the nv city route is worth it. Not sure about availability, but the outside inn and intown campground (they have tent cabins) are both nice, dog-friendly, and walking distance to NV city. New moon cafe, friar tucks, stone house, and 3 forks bakeries are all very good eateries for dinner in nv city. The above post are my choice for breakfast. There a few club/music spots in town. Grass valley also has some nice places to eat, drink, and be merry. No big walking needed, but the south yuba River is pretty sweet. In June, flows will be too high (and cold) to safely swim, but easy access is like 15-ish minutes from nv city.
There are definitely some hotels in grass valley that generate income more from the meth biz than tourists, something to consider when booking.

Nevada City is a k00l spot. There be lodging options in the downtown area with plenty of spots for foodski and drinkski (and coffeeski in the AMski). Leaving town, just stay on Hwy 20 east and you'll hit I-80 in an hour or so.
If you do opt for Truckee, 50/50 brewpub is tits.
Safe travels!Daniel Ortega eats here.

koo1 spot. is that some new age energy convergence point? I finally figured out KOOL. which it is. It's where all the old hippies went off to, young ones too. don't know about the beer, I drink drink mass market craft beer (isn't that an oxymoron), but doesn't every place in America have good craft beer these days?

If you end up in Nevada City, make sure to hit up Ol' Republic. Their Cosmic Flyby and Clouds of Jupiter IPAs are stellar.
Truckee, where I live, is kinda touristy (at least downtown). Lodging is $$$$$. We do have no less than 4 breweries, though: Truckee Brewery, Tahoe Mountain Brewing, Alibi Ale (just a tap room), 50/50. Dining is $$$ and can be hit/miss (my favorite and a place that I feel has maintained a good consistency over the years is Pianeta). I honestly would only recommend my home town if you were going to be camping and hitting up the lake(s) or hiking or moutain biking...
Honestly, in regards to this criteria of yours--"not really looking for anything outdoorsy, just good food/drink density, decent hotel options..."-- Reno is the best option.
Quite a few great bars: Chapel, Craft, Reno Public House, Brasserie St. James, 40 Mile, 1864 Tavern, Death & Taxes,...
Quite a few solid restaurants: Sup (pronounced "soup"), Midtown Eats, Noble Pie, Peg's Glorified Ham & Eggs (OG greasy spoon breakfast!), and many more;
Several solid breweries: 10Torr, Imbib, Revision, Brewer's Cabinet...
...and cheap-ass hotels if you stay in one of the casinos (Circus Circus has free circus acts!).

If driving is any concern I’d want to clear the Sierra for a straight shot to SLC. Only problem with Reno is the smoke in hotels. It’s rough.

PM Rontele...I mean Splat. He's in Reno. Get all the advice you can, then go anywhere other than that.
Something about the wrinkle in your forehead tells me there's a fit about to get thrown
And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.
