    TV/cable question

    To start, fuck Tech Talk.

The situation: Running multiple TV's off one (Charter) cable feed. The way the (supposedly smart) guys set it up (they are definitely pretty smart but apparently not smat enough) is there are 5 cable boxes for 5 TV's. All are home run to the same place, a closet on the main level.

The problem: It doesn't work. Well it works but it freaks out and stops working. A lot. Tonight, for instance.

The desired solution: Instead of multiple cable boxes and intricate IR connections that are tenuous and sketchy, I'd like to have one point of control. I have this with DirecTV in another place. But fuck DirecTV. But I want something like a server that is the main contact for the cable, if you follow. A box. That works.

What I'm looking for is an elegant solution to running multiple TV's off one cable feed. It has to be out there. I can't find it. Help!

Maybe time to cut the cable man.

There are a lot of options for watching LIVE TV online now. Replace the Cable Box with a Chrome Box.

The thing is this is a vacation place, lots of different people visiting and using the place, I don't want to have to spend an hour explaining shit every time someone comes here. Looking for simple shit so people can just use the remote and watch TV -in various rooms and simultaneously- yeah I get that makes it harder.

Vacation place with 5 TV's? Must be like some sort of 10,000 sq ft mansion?

3 TV's in bedrooms, it adds up quick. But yeah we're wearing Ferraris and driving minks here.

Can't happen...one of the main sources of income for cable/satellite providers is equipment rental fees. They'll be charging you for all the boxes until the day you die and there's nothing you can do about it.

edit: Switch to a streaming service and buy your own streaming devices. No central control but at least you only pay for them once.

It does seem like you are correct. Also it seems like I have to be smarter than Charter, so there must be a way. But I've been looking into this (off and on) for a while with no luck.

i'll look into it thanks, I could just do youtube TV or similar but trying to explain to people how it works and what they have to do is kinda crushing. Tried it last summer with Amazon Firestick and no go, people were baffled, I had to backtrack. It wasn't that complicated but people threw up their hands.

    I need smarter friends.

    You people are on notice.

Watching TV while on vacation is always a top priority.

Open up the lock out and let the guests have access to the huge porn collection.

    No need for cable.

@cmcrawford: If you want snarky I can go that way. Ready?

Bottom line is we have this place and people come visit and I want to make it easy for them, which makes it easy for me. Lots of people watch TV before bed, so we set it up so they could, except the way it is now, sometimes they can't, and they don't bitch, but they ask, and then I'm in it. Which I'd prefer not to be.

    1) Replace all the TVs w red ones

    2) Go back to firesticks and let them figure it out themselves like they do at our Airbnb

You'd honestly be better off hiring some kid to create you a Chrome Box auto-logon device and just have it fucking lauch Youtube TV app. It's really not that hard. You can even have a different login for each TV.

Print instructions with three steps in 18 point bold font, laminate and move on with your life.

I'd prefer a focus more on the technical side than the socio-political side, but i know you fuckers, so carry on.

This is helpful, or at least might be helpful. Thank you. You are allowed one snarky comment without fear of retribution, go for it.

You Tube TV only allows you to stream on 3 separate devices at the same time. FYI.

    One charter cable box.

Roku stick or boxes on others use the charter spectrum app.

Check to see if they limit number of rokus or if it will work if charter isn't your internet provider.

A quick look at the Charter/Spectrum web site shows that you must have a Spectrum Modem, so that means Spectrum internet to use the Rokus. That said it would work if you had the right set up. I think Spectrum has a 5 device streaming limit but not sure. They're going to get you, one way or the other.

Jezuz, kill the TVs, gather in the oversized living room, and talk to each other. Or, just stare at your phones.

    Let's do some livin'

If you can just pay the $15 for their streaming service and still run 5 devices you can lose the cable box too.
