Steptoe Butte State Park - photo by Louis Tam

Steptoe Butte is a quartzite island jutting out of the silty loess of the Palouse hills in Whitman County, Washington, in the northwest United States. The 3,612-foot butte is preserved as Steptoe Butte State Park, a publicly owned 150-acre recreation area located 12 miles north of Colfax.

Have a friend who grew up here. Says he'd move back in a heartbeat if his wife would agree but she's a small town EWA girl (Dayton, WA) and loves the big city.

Some other friends of mine make the trip up here every year from UT to spend a week on houseboats.

#201 - Drive the scenic 'million dollar mile' located north of Sun Lakes Resort, Coulee City, Wa on Hwy 155. Portions of the highway were carved through the rugged basalt rock walls that make up the scablands of eastern WA. The mile long passageway brings you up from the floor of the Grand Coulee, to the top of the Coulee wall then back down again offering one of the most scenic views of the Coulee Corridor. It's called the 'million dollar mile' because of the huge price tag that came with its construction in 1948. (Photo by John Marshall)

I didn't take it. It by Tom Thomas from sun top lookout (photog erroneously list it as "fire top lookout." I have been to this and several other lookouts around Rainier and throughout the Cascade range. I've always thought it would be a cool job.

You can see the rest of Rainier's Fire lookouts here and these are some other iconic fire lookouts in Washington.

    Love it!
I highly recommend volunteering to stay there overnight.

Grill meat, drink beer and play cribbage.

We did that loop with our 12yo scouts 4yrs ago (with side trip up 7 Finger Jack). Such a great hike. I could spend weeks out there without getting bored.

Did that 7 finger jack once. Talk about a workout. I don’t think there’s one switch back.

No pictures because I was doing 85 .. but watching fire tankers dropping west of highway 82 was pretty damn cool this afternoon.

    Hope it rains this summer.

Maybe belongs in the top gun thread?

    Is that beast off leash?

I let him off leash until I hear a marmot squeak, he takes off after them and if he actually cornered one I’m sure the marmot would fuck him up.

No dogs in the backcountry. Please explain to me how an off leash dog is not violating LNT principles? Right, you can't. Thanks for being a selfish, entitled shit.
