Washington teen’s duct tape dress gets her finalist spot in scholarship contest

A Washington teen with a passion for crafting, sketching and designing put her skills to work to become a finalist in a contest that could win her a $10,000 college scholarship.

Sunnyside High School student Larissa Leon created a beautiful gown that you’d never know was made from duct tape. It stood out among more than 106 entries to become a finalist in Duck Tape brand’s Stuck at Prom® Scholarship Contest.

Leon said she was inspired by the dresses that stem from both indigenous and Spanish practices.

“The gown was designed to honor my culture, helping me pay homage to my roots, along with making a beautiful dress for prom that’s made out of duct tape, something that many of my friends and family thought to be impossible,” Leon said.

Her dress is adorned with flowers, duct tape lace and ribboning.

Leon has made it to the top 10. The public will now vote on who should win the contest and scholarship. Voting is open until July 14, 2021.

Also, I'm not dumb enough to try to come back on I-90 West over the pass in the afternoon at the end of a holiday weekend, but apparently the Hood Canal Bridge is now one of those traffic hot spots to avoid at all costs. No accidents, I think the main reason for the back up is the traffic light on the Kitsap side of the bridge. Traffic was backed up nearly to the junction of 101 and 104.

365 Things to do in Washington State

#211 - Find Seawall Park in Langley, Washington. This small but scenic park runs parallel to Langley’s main street and features picnic tables, beach access and a great view of Saratoga Passage and the Cascade mountains. (Photos via GoWhidbeyCamanoIslands)

365 Things to do in Washington State

#223 - Explore the San Juan Islands Scenic Byway. This byway is divided into three segments: the first is the marine highway route between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands which includes a ride aboard a Washington State Ferry. The second is a driving tour around San Juan Island, and the third is a driving tour on Orcas Island. Overflowing with natural beauty, history, arts and culture, you will love touring the San Juan Islands! (Photo by Christopher Teren)

Or because the ferry system is a nightmare with Canceled boats, delayed sailings, overloaded boats (not everyone with a reservation will get on), crew shortages , boats out of service or broken down, and long ferry line waits (six hours isn't unusual here on a Sunday). This summer has been a complete disaster for the ferry system, We have 100 less car space leaving the island this year than we did last year (which was less than the year before), and the only way to be sure to catch the first boat in the morning you have to put your car in line the night before, to catch the 10:45 (dedicated boat for this island) plan on getting in line no later than 9.

    Here's something a little different:

365 Things to do in Washington State

#228 - Visit the historic Pataha Flour Mill located in the heart of the Palouse region in southeast Washington. This area is famous for growing wheat on a large scale, and this historic mill is a great place to stop and learn the workings of a flour mill and about the agricultural region the wheat is harvested from.
