Was in the Enchantments yesterday (with 1000 of my closest friends) for some Larch Madness. Crowds were absolutely insane. Still able to find some solitude if you got away from the main trails/lakes.

Wife and I hiked to Lake Valhalla on Friday. I'd never been there before. Really pretty and fairly easy hike just a few miles from Stevens Pass. We started from the Smithbrook trailhead and that made for about a seven mile hike. There's even a small sandy beach at the lake. Awesome hike for dogs!

I was trying to kill a deer but all I found was these mediocre views. I'll call it a win since I didn't see anyone in 3 days.

365 Things to do in Washington State

#273 - Plan a fall road trip along the White Pass Scenic Byway. This route offers a tri-mountain panorama! Mt. Rainier, Mount St. Helens and Mt. Adams are accessible and there is still time this season to explore. Read our feature story here

365 Things To Do In Washington State

#284 - Experience the The Haunting of Coupeville - a month long fright-fest in and around the city of Coupeville on Whidbey Island. During the month of October, scarecrows, scary barns, fields, and even Fort Casey are participating to "amp-up" your fear factor. The 1998 hit movie Practical Magic was filmed in this charming, historic seaport and will be showing on multiple days this month to celebrate the season! (Photo via GoWhidbeyCamanoIslands)

The house they lived in was only a shell built on San Juan Island just for the movie, after they finished filming they had to tear down the house and restore the park back to it's original condition.

The Chevron station at the top of Snoqualmie Pass has some pretty good homemade tamales but you have to ask the cashier, there’s pork, chicken and pepper jack with red or green sauce

In 2007 I was traveling back to Washington from a 2 week excursion through northeastern Washington, into BC, Alberta (Waterton Lakes Provincial Park), Montana (Glacier National Park), Idaho and Oregon one late afternoon in September. Descending out of the Blues on Hwy 204 the valley lay out before me with its seemingly endless wheat fields glowing in the setting sun like polished gold. It was an incredible sight, breathtakingly beautiful and one I have never forgotten. It was this view that made me fall in love with the area I now call home and every year at wheat harvest I get to relive it again.

In 1854, the United States Government began scouting the Cascades for railroad routes and wagon trails. In 1865, construction started on a wagon road on the west side of the pass to lure settlers to Seattle. But on the east side, just a trail existed and settlers often used rafts and barges to cross Lake Keechelus. Finally by 1867, the wagon road stretched from Seattle to Ellensburg. In 1884, a toll was placed on the road to help pay for its maintenance. By 1905, harsh winters and flooding forced settlers to rebuild the road several times to provide a safer and passable road.
