This year there are a number of adaptive skiers really pushing the freeskiing side of the sport way further than I ever expected anyone would.

something self indulgent... I've been handicapped in slow progression for the better part of 15yrs. Only visible to those who know enough to look. A minor inconvenience compared to someone with a debilitating spinal cord injury, missing a limb or one of our senses.

I can watch any one of the links over and over and over (with pleasure) and only taste the sense of well-being these athletes have.

Pretty impressive to make that pond skim on 1 ski.

I was skiing at Wolf Creek this season hiking the ridgeline up to Alberta Bowl (pretty decent hike).
Looking up I saw a guy hiking and his poles looked a bit different, didn't think much of it; head down, keep hiking.
Upon reaching the top I see the guy is skiing on one ski with out-riggers, the other leg amputated beneath the knee.
We're the only two up there I ask him if he's already been down.
"Oh yeah, I been down the right side now I'm going to hit the left."
Cool.
He skis off in 6-12" wind affected snow and kills it.

The next lap he's hiking it again (that's lap 3 for him) I catch up to him at a flat before the steep hike when he's taking his prosthetic leg out of his back pack and screwing it on to a knee cuff.
"I wondered if you had leg in there!"
We hike the ridge together and shoot the shit.

I said "There's nothing I like better than skiing.".
He said "Me neither."
I said: "I can tell".

Chilling.

^^This is some amazing stuff. There is a kid on the Big Sky junior freeride team who is legally blind. He skis the lines with the help of radio transmissions telling him what's ahead, which way to turn, etc. I mean can you imagine the guts of that kid. Skied the Big Couloir this spring too.

Had the pleasure of riding the lift with a sit skier attending a clinic. Interesting to talk gear development and how they are working to overcome the current limits . The local mountain has some very good sit skiers, but to see some of the best in the world pounding the mountain for a few days was an eye opener. Always nice to watch world class athletes.

I was lucky enough to take a few runs w/ Andy in UT 7-8 years ago, but he kinda dropped off the radar. Most recent info I can find is a 2017 article. Sounds like he is still ripping. :fkna

I had an experience that isn't quite at that level but it really affected me. I met a guy named Tom at Hunter Mountain. What a great guy. I'll never forget what he said to me:

“Harvey, a wheelchair is a pain in the ass. Doorways, stairs, everywhere you go, there’s something in your way. On my ski, I can go where I want. On my ski, I am free.”

When Warren was in charge there was always a section dedicated to skiers overcoming physical challenges. He had 3 track races, blind skiers, and The Jimmy Heuga Challenge to name a few.

They are one of the things I miss most from the films, and I agree these folks belong in the films.
