So I’m the only one who’s bummed that we have farmed out our manufacturing to a country that regularly, brutally, suppresses individual freedoms and basic human rights?
There are so many more issues at hand here, it is difficult to know where to start.
Individual freedoms in China are regularly suppressed. Religious freedoms, envIronmental regulations, LGBT freedoms are a joke and if Grandma doesn’t put enough zippers, fast enough, into that Marmot jacket she gets thrown out of her house managed by the Communist government.
Kinda ironic that we get to express our individual freedoms skiing every day on products that are made by economic slaves.
When I worked for MegaSkiCorp, it got to the point where I would openly heckle Sales Reps when they would spout off the “Our factory is the cleanest in any ‘off shore’ location. What a joke. One rep from a major clothing company told me they were instructed to never use the term “China”. “Off shore” only.
Skis from China? That’s perfect for you dentists. I’m skiing on a sticks hand made in the US by a craftsman who skis, not a slave.
It’s just a matter of time before all hard goods from Atomic and Salomon are made “off shore”.Ski Shop - Basement of the Hostel

I blew up the sidewall in a few different places on a set of Stockli DP Pro+, these ones. my buddy who was a dealer told me I’m not the only one who did. The initial quality on the ski was unreal, and I skied the shit out of them. Haven’t heard of this problem on any of their other skis, my buddy’s DPs are running strong and they’re from ‘08 iirc.

I don't want to start a politics debate, and I agree with almost everything you said, but China doesn't have a communist government. They have a planned economy but the workers don't control the means of production (if they did they would have better working conditions), which is the most fundamental part of socialism/communism.
I agree on skiing made in USA sticks not only for the better working conditions, but for the increased quality. Sure the Chinese planks can be durable and ski well and whatnot, but at the end of the day they were made by someone who has likely never seen snow, let alone skied. I'm not sure why it matters, but to me its important to have my skis made by people who ski them. A kid in Salt Lake who went on a dawn patrol that morning and who lays up Voiles in the afternoon is going to put a lot more care into it than someone in China who is working for pennies on an assembly line. Same for Reno, Oregon, Tahoe, Denver etc. Skis made by skiers ski better to me.
But thats just like, my opinion man.

If you wana get all political consider that much of the rest of the world considers America a war like country of religious fanatics with no shotage of terrorists
but really we are talking the nuts & bolts of manufacturing skis eh
do you really think some guy running a ski press in the atomic factory in yurp necessarily goes skiing ?
I think its all up to the designers/the ski testers/ the people who run the factory and being close enough to snow to actualy ski what is being made is a plus
But if you want core I know the DPS manufacturing manager is hard core cuz he rode his loaded bike & trailer thru town from SLC headed to ski Denali with a set of DPS strapped to the top. They must have been riding in the snow up on hy 37, down south you can find stuff to eat but not up there ... I hope they took enough foodLee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know

DPS China built Lotus 120s circa 2006 were the lightest version made.
The bamboo sidewalls were fragile, really a design issue, but everything else, including the topsheets were well done.
Yeah, people broke them, but the design was optimizing weight, so again, not a manufacturing issue. People who break bamboo fly rods blame the rod.Merde De Glace On the Freak When Ski

^^^Same for my 2006 Wailer 95’s. Sidewall could give you splinters but otherwise those skis were well built, and still good to go.

I do like buying skis made in America. I go out of my way to do it. That said, it's because I feel good about supporting local communities and ski makers who are willing to experiment.
I don't buy into your argument that because China has bad working conditions by our standards it is unethical to purchase consumer goods from China, nor do I perceive a big probable quality difference simply by virtue of manufacturing there. Separately, as several others have noted, it's on the brand with any external manufacturer to make sure the supply chain is doing a good job. That may be harder for small batch orders like skis than making them yourself (problems like the Bastard Renegades 4FRNT had this year are much easier to avoid if you make your own skis).

Even if you want to feel all patriotic and pay double for a ski pressed and finished in the states, just about every component of that ski, base material, glues, fiberglass, edges, etc all made in China. Your ski might say Made in USA, but everything it was made with except possibly core came from China.
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Did I finally find the locked Poly Ass fourm?
“The Amnesty International travel advisory for the country of the United States of America calls on people worldwide to exercise caution and have an emergency contingency plan when traveling throughout the USA,” the alert stated.
It specifically warns travelers about the risks of “places where large number of people gather, especially cultural events, places of worship, schools, and shopping malls" and to "exercise increased caution when visiting local bars, nightclubs, and casinos."
“Under international human rights law, the United States has an obligation to enact a range of measures at the federal, state, and local levels to regulate access to firearms and to protect the rights of people to live and move freely without the threat of gun violence,” the non-governmental organization added.
However, it added that “the government has not take sufficient steps to meet this obligation.”
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement over the weekend calling the U.S. a “gun society” and warning Japanese nationals to “be aware of the potential for gunfire incidents everywhere in the United States” and “continue to pay close attention to safety measures.”
Uruguay, meanwhile, warned citizens to be wary of “growing indiscriminate violence, mostly for hate crimes … which cost more than 250 people their lives in the first seven months of the year."
The South American nation’s alert added that due to “the indiscriminate possession of firearms by the population,” travelers were advised “to avoid areas with large concentrations of people like theme parks, shopping centers, art festivals, religious events, food festivals and any kind of cultural or sporting gathering.”
China had issued a warning before any of the three shootings had occurred, with the nation’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism issuing a travel alert noting the number of robberies, thefts and shootings in the U.S., after posting a similar alert last summer.

Yes. Crown Plastics in Ohio. UHMW Sidewalls and Tipspacer too. If you aren't buying from there, you are buying from ISO in Austria.
For ON3P, our resin is made in Oregon, and our composites are made in Alabama and Georgia.
Ironically from your post, for us, the *only* material in our skis from China is the bamboo core (cannot grow bamboo big enough in the USA to source it here). Everything else is from the US or Europe. That is the case for basically every US made company.
To compliment Luke's post above, for ON3P:
Core - China
Base - USA
Sidewall - USA
Edge - Austria
VDS - Austria
Topsheet - Austria
Epoxy - USA
Fiberglass - USASeriously, this can’t turn into yet another ON3P thread....

The raw UHMW is made in the USA.
The epoxy system is two part. The base in Part B is made in China but the rest is from the USA.
The percentage of material that originated in China is extremely low. You made it sound like everything originated in China which couldn't be farther from the truth.
But what do I know? Its not like this is my job or anything...

Also (as I am sure you are aware), we've done this before. Almost to the day. I guess....talk to you again next October?

Edit to add screenshot so people don't have to travel.
Oh and for the record. Bamboo tariffs did come in at 25%. Good thing trade wars are easy.Seriously, this can’t turn into yet another ON3P thread....
