What to see in one day outside of Las Vegas

So I'm heading out to Las Vegas (well Henderson) for a job interview at the end of this week. I have a day after things are done before I fly back and want to explore a bit. I'm not really interested in the Strip/casinos at all. My current plan is to rent a bike and spend Friday morning at Bootleg Canyon.

I'll have a car, so I can check out whatever in the afternoon/evening. Anyone have any ideas for some good sightseeing/light hiking? I'm trying to get a feel for what it would be like to live in the area if you're largely interested in outdoorsy rather than casino-based activities.

Hoover dam used to be cool 30 years ago when you could really see the place, now itís been completely neutered and is pretty boring.

Red rock Canyon national conservation area. 13 miles off the strip

Ski area is closed, but probably worth a drive to check it out. Definitely go to Hoover Dam, it's near Bootleg. Neutered or not, the artwork, statues and engravings are sweet.

I prefer the biking out of Blue Diamond over Bootleg Canyon, but they are both pretty cool. There is a bike shop to rent a bike right in Blue Diamond, I cant think of the name off the top of my head. And I am to lazy to google it.

Red Rock seems most likely and this thread is pushing me more in that direction. Thanks!

I've heard really good things about Blue Diamond, but had seen lots of videos of Bootleg and if I were to move there, it would likely be closer to where I'd want to live given the job, so I figured I'd check it out.

Bootleg is a bunch of fun. Bring some knee pads - those rocks will open you up if you fall on them. Depending on when you're there, there are companies that run shuttles, if you're into that sort of thing.

I'm definitely bringing the pads. I got some light body armor for downhill this year (just a compression shirt with light shoulder pads and a back protector). I'm tempted to bring it too, but I think that's more desire to use new gear rather than actual need for what I'm likely to ride. I'm renting a bike from All Mountain Cyclery, who I think is one of the shuttle companies. I wouldn't mind doing a shuttle lap or two along with whatever else i linked with that. I'm not exactly in peak biking shape yet this season.

Grand Canyon? Hoover Dam? Ever been?

Zion is fairly close, but Snow Canyon NW of St. George is closer and much less crowded.

The River Mountain Trail is an awesome paved pathway ride. 34 miles or sumpin. If you have a car drive up the pass toward Pahrump, hit a side road and look down on the Strip. Which we all should.

I know, right? Grand Canyon is 250 miles from Vegas, and the OP said:

I actually considered driving up to St. George, but in the end wanted to get a bit of a feel for the closer stuff. Same with the Grand Canyon. I might take a drive out toward that area though. I will probably stop at the Hoover Dam. I'm staying in Boulder City the last night so I'm right there.

I've never been in the Southwest at all save to pass through airports, so it's all new to me.

Oh man, see if you can get a day or two. So much shit to see, besides that godawful Vegas.

I just don't think I'm going to finish the interview until too late Thursday to leave then, so I mostly tried to keep things that were easy within one day. Plus, I kind of wanted to get a feel as to what it would be like living closer to Vegas (which has never sounded appealing to me) and how I'd like the hiking/biking I could do regularly. It actually seems like a great spot as a base for weekend length adventuring, but I like to get out more than that.

Why would you tell him to visit Snow Canyon from Vegas? WTF it's cool canyon but not a destination and about 1% as cool as Zion. Which is why it's not crowded.

Go check out Pahrump so Vegas doesn’t look so bad if you’re really considering moving to Vegas.
