Sweet, westside rd action. Big quiet country on that side.

    You're on Aurora there?

Yep, good eye. The road is in amazing shape. Any vehicle could drive it if it was open. But I believe the park service has decided to keep it closed indefinitely and just keep it in pristine shape so they can do repairs to the bridges and culverts as needed. Good news for gravel grinders.

It was 16 bike miles round trip to the trailhead I used. It's 18 miles round trip to the end of the road where bikes are not allowed any further. I believe its a little over 2,000 ft elevation gain round trip (up on the out and back). It's not enough biking miles to make it a great bike ride alone so pick a trail to hike as well. Carbon River is similar (14 miles round trip of biking allowed) and Dosewallips (13 miles round trip) in the Olympics .

a 600 km bikepacking trip in the nwt/yukon

started in whitehorse where we found that it is possible to pack 4 bikes and passengers in a pa-31 navajo if all the occupants (and pilot) are of reasonable size.

the weather was a bit mixed when we took off so much of it was spent at 3,500 m to stay above the clouds, occasionally we had some views of the area we would be cycling.
    whitehorse

landed at camp 222 about 4 in the afternoon so got things setup and started to bike over macmillion pass in the selwyn mountains.

loaded up with enough food to cover the 240 km until we got to ross river and resupplied.

apparently we would not be doing this with dry feet

back to the yukon after a brief stint in the northwest territory

set up camp at the mac pass airstrip, there's some mining exploration ops starting up so a bit of heli and vehicle traffic in the area

we had an easy 40 km of mostly down, bed surface was great and held up well to the pouring rains we had overnight

cruising next to the south macmillian river and the itsi range

we made some new friends - i made a side deal with them: they get 1 cc of blood/10,000 corpses pretty sure we came out even

the upper canol is still very much a pioneer road, some of the hills were long, loose, and steep so occasionally we had to hike-a-bike

once in the flats, a bridge was generally the best place to stop try and keep away from the bugs

    nice views at dragon lake

the road was closed earlier in the season for fires and then flooding, we got into a burn section right about the time my throat started to hurt. turns out what felt like horrible strep throat was covid. i felt like crap but managed to bike 75+ km each day - so long as i kept going things were good. whenever i stopped i wanted to collapse.

yard sale, after a monsoon type rain and camp for the night

    cruising along the ross river

got to pelly river crossing at ross river

i took to the foot bridge

rest of the group took the ferry

heading out of ross river on a brief section of paved rd. two went ahead as we (spouse and i) waited for the general store to open to stock up on meds for me.
they took a wrong turn and ended up ~2-25 km behind us, we ended up riding the lower canol separately

the lower canol rd follows along the lapie river for a while

loads of wild strawberries and raspberries to pick along the way

    getting into the alpine

    many cool lakes

    rose lake at 4am

    cockpit view

    into the lodgepole pine

    more hills

    heading into the final pass

    end of the lower canol

stopped in johnson's crossing to clean them out of the little food they had - there used to be hot food regularly available, which we were depending on

stopped to check out a coyote between johnson's crossing and jake's corner on the alcan, we were hanging out after eating some food and saw what we thought was a cyclist, turns out it was phil (i think that was his name) he is skateboarding from fairbanks, ak to jasper, ab...

some paved miles to get back to whitehorse

treated ourselves to a fancy hotel and dinner, then off to the hotsprings the next day

Lovely, except for the bugs. I wonder if I can convince my very popular with mosquitoes GF to join me on a trip to the Arctic...

Oh shit. At first I thought it was vehicle vs bike but it appears it was a bike crash only. Just horrible either way.

Certainly put a damper on the weekend. New course was much more brutal than the '19 one with more pave' riding and every bit was damp to wet from overnight rain.
