Maybe he can use that for his defense "yes, I stole a lot of skis, but I also put in a lot of work selling those skis and I feel I should be compensated for said work."

Nah thieves deserve what is coming. I just find the numbers almost unbelievable.

Like, he could have gotten a second job and worked. Isn't the whole point of stealing the supposed easy score aspect. The juice doesn't seem worth the squeeze here.

Because your "hour per ski sold" estimate is way off. He put in way less work than you assume to get the returns he received. It might take me an hour total to sell a pair of skis, but if I was selling thousands, I'd have the operation going much smoother and faster.

All these assumptions of economies of scale imply smarts this guy really didn't have. Selling on eBay and shipping is still a mostly manual process all in all.

As far as I can tell, Aspen management are the real fools though and really the only reason he made anything at all is because they weren't paying attention for years. Craziness.

I think it's a pretty big time investment no matter how you slice it. OTOH it's pure profit other than that time invested.

Per Dee Hubs' math he was theoretically making $275 per pair of skis. For the sake of argument let's say that's way off and it was more like $200/pair. He got the skis free, so even if each pair required a full hour of labor to ship, which is doubtful, that's $200/hr. Not many jobs pay $200/hr, especially "second" jobs. Sounds like a lot of juice to me.

    He did it..

    One ski at a time!
And it didn’t cost him a dime
He kept those fuckin ebay prices down

Well, I left New England back in eighty nine
An' went to Aspen workin' on a rental line
The first year they had me puttin' boots on stinky feet
Every day I'd watch them bunnies roll by
And sometimes I'd hang my head and cry
'Cause I always wanted me one that was skanky and sweet

One day I devised myself a plan
That should be the envy of most any man
I'd sneak skis out of there and flip em on the old e bay
Now gettin' caught meant gettin' fired
But I figured I'd have a stack of cash by the time I retired
I'd have me a gripload of at least a hundred grand.

I'd get it one ski at a time
And it wouldn't cost me a dime
I’d keep those fuckin ebay prices down

I'm gonna boat around in style
    I'm gonna drive everybody wild
Cause I’ll be the richest ski shop rat around.

So the very next day when I punched in
With some tape and boxes and with help from my friends
I left that day with enough for a couple skiers
I've never considered myself a thief
But Aspen wouldn't miss just a couple a skis
Especially if I strung it out over several years.

The first day I got me some Salomon clamps
And the next day I got me a pair of Ramps
Then I got me a pair of Fischers and some Devastators
Ordered things I needed like tape and a box
And bindings an brakes an' they arrived at the shop
But the big stuff we snuck out in my Lincoln Navigator

Now, up to now my plan went all right
'Til some accountants came to the shop one night
And that's when they noticed that something was definitely wrong.
The count said we had fifty three
But we were supposed to have seventy three
And when we tried to call the shop girls all them hoes were gone.
So we worked it out so we wouldn’t get caught
Took a pile of cash but we paid em off
That operation was runnin' just like a song

    Corporate oversight was another sight
We had two on the left and one on the right
But when we pulled out the coke all three of 'em didn’t see shit
The back end looked kinda funny too
But we cooked those books and when we got through
Well, that's when we noticed our ebay site had a million hits

About that time my wife walked out
And I could see in her eyes that she had her doubts
But she opened the door and said "Honey, let’s buy a boat"
So we drove to the lake for a little cruise
But we got lit up with the red-and-blues
I could hear everybody laughin' for blocks around
But up there at the court house they didn't laugh
'Cause to type it up it took the whole staff
And when they got through the charges weighed sixty pounds.

I did it one ski at a time
And it didn’t cost me a dime
I kept those fuckin ebay prices down
Gonna spend 2 years in jail
Then try ‘er again at Vail
I’ll be richest ski-shop rat around

    Ugh! Yeah, RED RYDER
    This is the COTTON MOUTH
With some janky ass rental skis for sale Come on
Huh, This is the COTTON MOUTH
And negatory on the cost of this biz-ness there RED RYDER
You might say I went right up to the skico
And picked it up, it's cheaper that way

No, his wife got a lesser punishment for pleading guilty to a lesser crime because she wasn't the orchestrater behind all this. She's still to be sentenced and may well have jail time, just not time in a prison.

I wonder if he’s gettin’ holed up in the state pen or at an honor farm? I’d think the Colorado state pen is a pretty rough place.

No scam can last for years without others being complicit or intimidated to stay silent

Perhaps the company doesn't want the optics of how bad or deep this scam went up the latter.

He oversaw the retail operations so he answered to the C-Level execs. He set everything up for himself on the ordering side and cooked the books as needed on the back end.

I'd definitely bet that he had a bunch of shop rats doing order fulfillment.
