I can not imagine how hot hundreds of years old oak logs would burn.

Wow. What a sad day for Paris. I was lucky enough to get to see it a couple of years ago. Glad I did.

Apparently they use something called atomic oxygen that they harvest from space to clean smoke off of old paintings.

loss is very sad; things have been rebuilt before and will be rebuilt again. at some level the japanese approach of regularly rebuilding sacred monuments in the same technique so people know how to rebuild has merit.

    Notre Dame Cathedral burning...

Sad to see its demise. Glad I got to see it in person before today. Truly was spectacular and I was taken aback when I first saw it, as I’ve already said.

Kind of a miracle this hadn’t happened previously I guess.

One thing I’m curious about. They said they’ve raised the 6.8 million dollars for renovations recently from the private sector, a large portion from rich Americans. How much did the Roman Catholic Church actually contribute? That, to me, seems like chump change for them. But hey, I’m a Protestant.

The vatican is a business, and like most smart businesses, they learned long ago never to invest their own money into a venture. That’s what the suckers, er, I mean the faithful, are for.

Yeah... you’ve got a point. The Church in Europe doesn’t exactly have a good track record. I was kinda shocked the TV cameras actually found people singing hymns.
But, good for them. Glad there are some in Europe that still believe.

Feel free to pile on me...

Under a 1905 law, Notre-Dame de Paris is one of 70 churches in Paris built before that year which are owned by the French state. While the building itself is owned by the state, the Catholic Church is the designated beneficiary, having the exclusive right to use it for religious purposes in perpetuity. The archdiocese is responsible for paying the employees, for security, heating and cleaning, and for ensuring that the cathedral is open free to visitors. The archdiocese does not receive subsidies from the French state.

So many cities in Europe were destroyed and then rebuilt after WW2. This rebuild will be a piece of cake.

A gargoyle is a mythological beast or animal (or sometimes human like head) that is used in architecture to redirect water away from the roof of a structure from running down the walls or structure by having a opening in the mouth of the ornamental structure open and used as a spout.

A Troll is a monster that lives in a cave or sometimes under a bridge (or the internet on TGR- one who makes a deliberately offensive or provocative online post)
