    Cool Powder - Heliski skis

I would like to ask for suggestions about powder/heliski skis. I have been skiing on some Vokle 195 kuro skis for the last couple of years for powder and heliskiing. Vokle isn’t making them any longer. What would you suggest as a substitute ski for a big Clydesdale guy like me = 6’4”/ 275 lbs guy.

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

Hacksaw at my peak 6'3" and 267 I used Fat-ypus A-Lotta 172-140-158, 190 length. Like engines no substitution for displacement. It is physics, as weight increases you need more float to ride at the same depth in the snow. Don't let the lighter guys tell you they ski powder on 115 waist skis and that is all you need, they have never walked a mile in our shoes. I have lost nearly 50 lbs and now find I can pow ski on much smaller skis. I also have Ski Logik Depth Hoar 143 waist, G3 Empire 127 waist, Powder Boards 200 and 195 length, Fat-ypus Mack 5 139 waist and Dean Cummins H2O made by Praxis. Have the most days on the Depth Hoars but all of those listed work great. These big boards changed my world from not looking forward to skiing storm/powder days to loving pow days.

Fat-ypus has all boards on sale from $790 now $490

These might be a bit narrow for you (depending on your preferences), but I've put a handful of deep cat days on ON3P C&Ds and Praxis Protests (189, 192 length) over the last couple year.

They're both amazing. To shittily summarize a reductive difference: The C&D floats a little better, and the Protest is a little more confidence inspiring when you hit odd bits/debris/wind fucked snow. I'd probably go 196 Protests at your size.

    I don't need more float than these, but wouldn't mind trying some L138s/Powboards sometime. I'm 6'2", 230 + gear.

Damn those are some pretty convincing praises of the C&D. Did anyone ever get their pair on a scale? I'm not fortunate to go cat/heliskiing (getting a sled for next year so will be able to do some partially mechanized touring) and would be dragging them uphill. I imagine you could easily build a lighter protest, without even going to the UL core.

If you like your float coming from the tip of the ski and can’t adjust your technique then get something like a C&D. If you can adjust your technique a little and want the best pow ski experience ever, go with the 196 protest or the lotus 202 138 or praxis powder boards.

I’m not sure I’d consider consistent skiing style a shortcoming.

The C&D rules. I agree with LWS -
It Out floats my old lotus or protest.

Wonder how the guy who bought my 193cm G3 Empire 127 made out this season, loads of tip rocker and stiff AF.

196 Bodacious. Buddy who was one of Theo’s first guides at ARG. Spent maybe 12-14 years guiding up there. Still says a 196 Bodacious is the best ski he’s ever used in AK. He’s about 6’ 230. They make fast feel really slow.

No one said it was. Now that you mention it though adaptability is definitely a strength.

I love the igneous Gulo for all things AK...steeps, pow, technical mini-golf, sending, etc...spent all of my days in Chugachistan and Juneau this year on ‘em. Brought Spoons, Bodaciouses, BMX115’s, K2 Mindbenders...and all are great...but the Gulos are my faves.

Mike will customize however you want. Basically a tweaked Kuro. Mine have flat tails and minimal tail rocker. The All-wood&glass / no plastic is extremely responsive and harmonic too.

HMU if you have specific questions.
