Patagonia flips the bird to financial firms

    Walking the talk.

The Patagonia fleece vest, worn over a collared shirt, signifying wealth and power, usually branded with a logo of a tech or venture capitalist origin, often given out by companies as a team-building perk. Patagonia, however, has decided they will no longer sell vests to be slapped with branding by firms they see as harming the planet. A communications exec who tried to order a supply of the vests discovered Patagonia’s new policy when they rejected her request...

I guess the firms could go to the local retailer and buy them out.

^ That is funny. I had no idea that was a thing.

Now I don’t know whether to be proud or ashamed of my Patagucci fleece vest. It’s pretty beat up tho.

Bold move. That's awesome. I tend to buy something everytime they do something like this (guilt free). I'm accumulating some nice gear fairly quick

One of the places I work loves to give me branded patagucci. Guess it passes muster with patagucci board of ethical enforcement.

Ethics as marketing? Virtue signalling through branding? A business plan...

Don't you have a condo to rent to flatlanders you'll shit on?

Patagonia has survived independent because they've been the only outdoor brand to successfully attempt to walk the walk. If you shit on North Face because they sold out to sorority girls, you can't shit on Patagonia. Same idea.

To be clear, I really like Patagonia. I think that while their fit can be funky, they make high quality goods with relatively friendly business practices. I have a few friends there and everyone I've met there from YC on down has seemed like good people.

What I find funny is all of this enviro/liberal/harmless flag waiving and making it as loud as they can. Meanwhile, they have a sizable military business unit that they most certainly don't talk about. Ask any spec ops guy if there's any Patagonia in their kit and they likely use something of theirs. It's decades old, too--nothing new.

Personally, I don't blame them and I think it's a good thing to support those guys with great product. It's lucrative, too, and it's nearly the best way to wear-test outdoor apparel and get qualified, direct feedback. But it does fly in the face of everything they seem to shout.

So I wonder if they'll say no to a trident embroidered on those vests?

Military sales are not a deal breaker most of their customers. Just my opinion. Small biz friendly Special Ops ordering system is bringing biz to the small USA outdoor suppliers. Smart marketing and brand move IMO. First, Everybody's talking about Patagonia right now. Winning. There's even a new thread in TGR. The brand got too hip/hot in their Premium (not retail) and Decorator channel. Sounds like it exploded. Got to be a joke. This move will enhance the brand name and outdoor image (they can charge for their quality) and the move won't hurt their total sales. I feel bad for the "3rd Party vendor". Opportunity in the grey market.

I had this conversation with some higher ups at Patagonia, their sell was they're not war mongers, but they do believe in providing the best kit possible for the folks sent oversees to keep them as comfortable/safe as possible.

But in this case someone showed their private email from Patagonia and then AJ made it into an article. That's not being loud or flag waving.

I dunno, I'd think a Patagonia vest is more suited to protecting someone from the frigid streets of midtown Manhattan than from an IED or a 7.62.
