My 30 hour outing to Nevados de Vilcun was epic. After adventuring along the deserted rural roads in the rain for several hours, I got over the S335 Interlagos pass at about 1,000m
Then it was back down to the Cherquenco-Ski Las Araucarias road. I was stopped at the park entrance to allow the day trippers down the narrow road, and took a walk to some waterfalls, reminding me once again why I love the Araucania.
At the turnoff to "Refugio Llaima" I got a whatsapp from the Nevados de Vilcun lodge administrator saying the road was blocked by snow (he was in Temuco). After enquiring with some workers parked nearby, I decided to go for it anyway, and without chains. I didn't dare take my foot off the pedal, and barely made it to the parking lot, where I promptly got bogged down, and had to haul my blankets through about 70cm of snow. The next day, there was 20cm more on the car.
Much to my relief, the military were stationed there.
Got an early start in shifting weather, confident that it would soon clear up. If not, I would just muck around the treeline in the monkey puzzle tree forest. This sector of the Parque Nacional Conguillio is called "Los Paraguas", or the umbrellas, in honor of the forest that rings the volcano. You can see why, when the clouds briefly lifted to display Llaima, and my destination, Cerro Colorado to the right, tempting me upward.
These trees, while lovely to look at, are spiny living fossils, which survived the dinosaurs cause those needles are are all pin prickers, ready to draw blood from unsuspecting gorbies.
After taking refuge under the trees, it cleared up and I set off again, with the peak within sight.

Once again it clouded up, but first I got a shot of the Cerro Japones, another cinder cone.
After hanging out behind a rock, a strange snowbow showed up
Then I pushed for the peak, just as V Villarrica popped out of the clouds.
Tolhuaca, Callaqui, and Lonquimay also made an appearance, just above the top lift of Las Araucarias (which didn't open).
Pichi (little) Llaima
The run down was dreamy
Even got a gully run in
Just as I was leaving, an old friend rose to the occasion
On the way out I couldn't believe what I had driven up the night before. Those kaki clothed chaps are my heroes for plowing out my escape route....

The 6th of August Volcan Villarrica was placed on yellow alert, again. Sernageomin had this to say about that
A 500 meter "zona de afectacion" is in effect, from the danger of bombs and spatters and other gifts from Lord Vulcan. As they say "emisión de piroclastos balísticos a 200 m del cráter, con una velocidad del orden de 100 km/hora."
After some cold patience, I caught the glow on a moonshiny night, from a safe distance of 28km.

Is there a ski area on Mocho-Choshuenco with lifts, or is it a sort of private cat operation?

See https://huilohuilo.com/actividades/s...o-utv-2-horas/
No ski lifts, just pisten moto and UTV, as their webpage says. In general, the terrain is fairly flat, except for the 2 actual cones.

Heading down to Valle Nevado in a week. Not looking like much of a season there. Any suggestions on potential places to switch to in southern Chile to make it better? Or can abandon hope of good skiing and just check out some natural beauty and adventure if there are good suggestions?

There is lots of snow from Chillan south. Your best bets would probably be Chillan or Corralco. Even better would be to rent a car and go where the weather is most attractive, and the best lifts running, booking lodging only once you decide. Alternatively, overnight bus or fly to Temuco and rent the car there, you save the 700km drive. overnight buses can be Very comfie as in horizontal sleep, and not expensive (see Turbus).
The best way to know how the conditions are is to look at the webcams

Thanks Casey. Thinking about trying Corralco. Fly into Temuco, rent a car and stay in Malalcahuello. Hope it's worth it!

Portillo , low tide again : nice scenery, nice hot pool, 1 classic b.c run, but the most over-rated resort anywhere ?

Skied Corralco yesterday, after it had been rained on, in a shaky lull in the precipitation. Wet but skiable snow low, runs good, and icy off piste up high.
The snow at the base was around 50-100cm, and, judging from the upper lift shacks snow cover, about 5 meters over 1,800m.
Chile, Argentina, Turkey, USA, China, UK, Spain, France, Bolivia and Ukraine were all in town at a FIS race. The Chinese women’s team was a first for me in Chile
First time I have seen a sign like this in Chile too

Skied Corralco today. Temps way too warm. Snow was super sticky. Terrible conditions to ski in. Had to stay on trail and top t-bar closed all day. Seems like a great place if conditions are right. Might try hiking a volcano tomorrow, renting touring stuff for Thursday and maybe try snowmobile skiing on Friday for a pretty penny. Let's see what we can make happen... All better than going to Valle Nevado and getting skunked!

Going to be warm, rainy and windy tomorrow in the Araucanía. But it will then cool down and some snow showers could happen on top of that soggy mess.

Just like to add a couple of photos from Corralco sunday.
The skiing was good
You get to exercise that old skill of riding a t-bar single, as most people here have difficulty going duo, with the added peligro of the low hanging cables and breakable t-bars, in high winds. But I would say that the wooden/rope "breakables" have mostly been replaced now.
With the arrival of cold weather again, and some remaining instability around, my bet is that the next couple days will be good skiing, if you can find the sweet spots.
