If I could make it happen, I would try to schedule a ski touring trip around July 20 in a zone where you are in the path of the full solar eclipse. What ski zones are in that path Casey?
Always thought “whatever” bout solar eclipses....... till I witnessed the 2016 NA one. Go out of your way to see it. You won’t b disappointed

Eclipse is the second of July though I think? And the path of totality is pretty far north of where I thought most of the good skiing was.

Yes July 2., 400km N of Portillo, Coquimbo region, with totality passing through the Elqui Valley and La Serena/. It will be late in the day and low in the sky, in a desertic environment. There are several observatories in the area, renowned for clear skies, good pisco and potent vibes. Highly unlikely to be able to ski tour up in the mountains, they get only 50mm of rain a year on the coast, but not impossible, maybe just a question of altitude along the road to the Aguas Negras pass, which closes for the winter. At 4,780m, the snow that falls there, stays. Penitentes territory.

The first week of September is good bet,
The bases that will be will be solid and peaking in depth on south faces, plus one dump can make it be wonderful for several days.

Tough one, not being a surfer myself. Try surf schools, or call lodging nearby your beach destination. Not too much surf near Pto Montt, although SUP is popular. Probably better surf between Cobquecura and Matanzas, nearer Santiago.

Back to the July 2 eclipse. The path through Chile and Argentina looks like this:

Location and weather are important. While the coast would be best, there is a high chance of overcast. The average cloud cover for this date is

As a bonus, the shadow map below shows the mountains inland that will prevent the valley bottoms getting a shot at the show. Same advice as for everything, go high. We are headed for Pisco Elqui.

    See the news item here.

Antillanca operated a "dry run" today, and loaded up this slick packed powder video:

But alas, they cannot open this weekend -

"Piuhua" is an easterly wind blowing in from Argentina, sometimes violently. Further north it is known as the "Puelche". This time it will affect a large swath of the lake district. So they say they can´t run the lifts.

    Too bad, today looked sweet

Got up to Laguna del Maule today, on what might be the best snow in the central zone.

Got to drive up to the aduana, but this was just fine with a whole valley to explore right from the car, up to 2,600m.

Here goes the trip report for Maule day 1

On my way back from Villarrica, I met up with Slava and friends in San Javier. Next day, we drove 130km up the impeccable Paso Pehuenche International highway, paved the whole way, and plowed up to the Chilean customs control at about 2,100m. This is less than a kilometer from the Laguna del Maule, in a massive caldera almost on the border of Argentina, which is itself is 23km away. As this road is not commercially important for either country, the snow just piles up from late May to October, and they wait for the end of winter to start trying to plow it out, with up to 6 meters having accumulated.

On the road to Paso Pehuenche, Volcan Descabezado Grande (3,950m)

Informed by the Carabinero at the aduana that we could not ski beyond the customs buildings, we immediately opted for the valley west which angled around out of sight. What we didn´t expect around the angle was this:

On the way back, we stopped at the Medano termas, and got us a good hot natural steam bath and then a bit of a lukewarm soak to be honest. Free, from a quirk of Bienes Nacionales. Cabins could be had there for $25,000 pesos, no cars across the river though.
