The parched central zone has a 90%+ deficit of rain to date this year (a whole 2mm has fallen), but the area around Temuco has had some torrential rains and has reduced their deficit to 34%. This is clear on the Sernageomin website, where Villarrica looks like this

Smitten by wanderlust at an early age, at 18 I had already skied Canada, Europe, and Morocco, and there was this ski magazine poster in my brothers room, with the tips of a pair of skis looking down the garanta at Portillo to the lake and hotel. It said, "if you are standing here, you want to be standing on Rossignols". Well, I didn't care much if it were Rossis or not, but I did want to stand there. So armed with Portillo and Pinochet in my vocabulary, a pair of Fischer C4´s, and Nordica boots bought in Andorra, in January 1977 I embarked on what would end up being a 14 month trip, skiing and hitchhiking from Canada thru the US, storing the skis with a girlfriend in LA, and proceeding by land to Chile. Met a swiss dude along the gringo trail who happened to teach skiing, and we spent the season skiing all the way down to Punta Arenas. I left Chile twice but my heart kept pulling me back, so I had to get some credibility to continue courting. After 2 years of letters, traumatic phone calls, and a couple trips back and forth, off came the beard and ear ring, we married, and then lived in Canada while I finished U. Were DINKS for a couple of years, then Andrea bribed me to go back to Chile (as is their want to do), and we settled on a 10 month trip through Asia and the south Pacific, ending in Chile in 1982. Skied NZ (and almost India) on the way! Next up were kids and the refugio in La Parva (same time, more bribes...). And here I am, washed up in a paradise of sorts. Lovely family, 3 great sons now producing grandkids to play with, and a rancho in Villarrica. A happy ending, so far.....

The detailed forecasts for tomorrow nights storm rolling in, give roughly 50cm total snow for the 4-day disturbance now. The chileans do not generally mention accumulations, but do try to scare you:

"Moderado" is considerable. The nevadas coupled with winds peaking at 80/90 km for Atacama to Coquimbo regions makes for an unusually northern storm, with lots of Cordillera to dump on, worthy of a warning. Start to set things up nice for the La Serena solar eclipse in July.

The international mountain passes forecast between Los Andes and Temuco (Valparaiso - Los Libertadores is Portillo):

While we wait for the flakes to fly, time for a public service, and lifting spirits. A new hut has been placed at 4,100m in "La Hoya" at the base of Cerro El Plomo (5,400m), with up to 12 beds. Seems it is a memorial, and they´d like to do more: "Líneas de libertad - Proyecto Refugios de Alta Montaña" Learn more here:

As long as we´re on the topic, El Plomo is an epic peak. A January trip up from 12 years ago:

I was an office working slouch with 3 days to do the peak, so we got some horses to help us to base camp.

Gave some great guys some work too.

This is the what the prior "hut" (at 4,300m) looked like back then:

"¿Qué pasó con la lluvia? Debilitated and delayed, once again. Very little accumulation. Seems the culprit this time was (google translate) "A low-level jet stream appeared around 3,000 meters high in the valley, which dried up the air mass and displaced all the precipitation to the coast further south."

There you go. Just got this from La Parva:

Final count some 20cm, fairly evenly distributed above 2.800m. A bit more for tomorrow afternoon, and that is it for the foreseeable future.

Weird and wild weather these days. Wind dumped trees, cut electricity to 100.000 homes, and even stirred up a few tornados south of Chillan. In a very rare event, Los Angeles got an F1. A common term here for this is “trombo”

With maybe 25-30cm of snow accumulated, and only 2mm of rain in Santiago, this storm is now petering out. Portillo will probably get more than the 3 Valleys, unless it all blows away....

The Chilean weather service has changed tack, and now predicts drier conditions for JJA. While the weak El Niño continues, a mix of factors point to a drier than usual winter.
The rainfall deficits are important to date, with Santiago having the least rainfall in 60 years (4mm):

    Name: Diapositiva 1.jpg
Views: 840
Size: 109.6 KB

Their predictive map for JJA is not encouraging.
    Name: Diapositiva 1 (1).jpg
Views: 913
Size: 148.2 KB

See the detail here (43 pages in Spanish)
    http://www.meteochile.gob.cl/PortalDMC-web/index.xhtml#

When this happens, I generally look more at the southern ski areas and try to fit trips down there into my winter. This will be easier this year, what with construction going on in Villarrica that needs to be supervised.

The snow-forecast for Chile N->S is:

    Name: My Snow Forecast com.jpg
Views: 913
Size: 129.3 KB

The dastardly freezing level will keep coming precipitation from falling as snow for the southern ski area base elevations, but will continue to pack it on the higher elevations. I don´t know where the recent snowfall info comes from (certainly not from the ski area websites), but it could be fairly accurate. As for the opening dates like "Opens in 12 days", forget it.

"<139mm" for Santiago is pretty much a death sentence for a good ski season in the central zone. In a "normal" season, there would already be some kind of a base at the beginning of June, and one could expect up to 250mm more rain in Santiago until the end of August. That said, the predictive models are all not aligned, with some saying "rainy", but the consensus is drier than usual.

Just based on this info, I would put off committing to airfares or lodging until the last minute.

I've been on the cusp of booking a trip to Valle Nevado for a few weeks now. The outlook isn't very encouraging.

Casey - What has it been like in early September the past few years? I'm looking at the first week of the Sept.
