Lawncare Folks - best pre-emergent for crabgrass?

It's on this year between me and the broadleafs.
Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.

    Subscribed.

Goddamned neighbors have a jungle backyard. Shit came under the fence. I got lazy last summer and it got in the lawn. Now it's gotten under the raised garden bed.

Weed and feed. Pretty much every fert company make it.

Otherwise, spray just after they first pop up. I personally wouldn't spray raised beds you'll eventually eat from and just hand weed those.

    Dimension. Timing is everything.

Wear a mask and gloves. And don’t let kids/dogs on the lawn until it’s well watered in.

Now you just need a Locke. Click image for larger version.

I'm in the same boat. Just put down some Scott's pre-emergent crab grass killer last week. Going to hit the lawn with Scott's weed & feed later in the spring.

Pick up a few bags of the Anderson’s Barricade. We’ll see how that goes.

Pre-emergent doesn’t work for crabgrass in warmer climate because crabgrass never goes completely dormant.

I hope the veggie garden isn’t downslope if you dump all that petrochemical shit on the lawn.

Thanks. That was my old house about 12 years ago.

Believe it or not, that’s 100% organic. Back when my kids were young and I didn’t want to chem out the lawn. Mowing practices ( and the mower itself ) go a long way.

Had 4 of these i ran commercially for a few years. Never used weed control, we’d pop out a few pieces of crab grass by hand if necessary.

Cut at 1-3/4” every 5 days or so. It’s basically like fertilizing every 5 days. And the customers absolutely loved it ( and paid accordingly )

It’s a Locke reel mower. Made in Connecticut. There’s a place in Rhode Island that specializes in repair/restore.

if it's green and you can mow it that's close enough to grass for me.

Scotts makes a good product and the stock doesn’t suck either.

Yes and no. It can adjust down to half an inch, so not quite golf greens quality. It’s more for ball fields, parks, lawns ( we bought one from the Pawtucket Red Sox ) , the Yankees still have a few they use.

Sharpen it once in the spring and your good all year with a slight adjustment every once in a while.

No that I have 3.5 acres of foxtails, I’d absolutely love to have crab grass. I’m tempted to just spray the whole field with diesel and light it on fire. But I won’t.

While we are talking lawns, what kind or riding lawn tractor should I get? Have a real tractor, need a riding lawnmower though. Not a zero turn, ground is too rough and rocky. Cub-cadet, John Deere, Dave the cash and go Huskee? I’m just looking for reliability at a good price.

Timing is key. Soil temp plays a big role on when things start to germinate and dictates when you want to apply a pre-emergent style fertilizer.

50-54 F in the top 1” of soil is a good rule of thumb.

Sac is cold in winter. If you don't have a hard freeze it acts as a perennial. It's why peaches don't grow well near the coast either.

When you spot crabgrass pull the clump before it drops seeds. Requires persistence but success is guaranteed. I suppose spraying helps but its a lot of chemicals for hit or miss results.
