GDM + TGR? I’d guess none of the surviving members give a fuck about marketing a steal your face or a dancing bear if they are getting a check from it.

I sorta like the Steal Your Line lugu. And the topsheet landing page background is heady af in a sorta Ray Troll way.

As long as shit stays well-executed, no one should complain.

From what I heard from Dead insiders I knew, Bill Kruetzmann was the one in the band who was most outspoken about trademark infringements, but I saw Bill Graham in the lot at Shoreline with a crew of security seizing t-shirts with their trademarks, or anything close.

Ha...we coulda been at the same show. When I was ~16, I went to AV to "hear" the dead ('86 or '87). I wasn't (and still ain't) a dead fan, but my brother and sister gave me $$$$ to drive them and their friends. While they went in, I hung out in the lot and got stoned....after the show, we had to wait about an hour for me to sober up before driving home.
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

The Grateful Dead were a great band, sure. But they have a sweet name and a fucking rad logo that evoke expectations exactly opposite of what the band delivers.

I wonder how many blossoming metalheads of my generation didn't know a thing about the Dead, but after introductory courses in Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer went looking for the next band to "discover". And, after being lured by that kick ass name & logo combo and anticipating something in between Zeppelin at best and Iron Maiden at worst, were disgusted by this hippie-dippy horseshit (their words, not mine).

I know my immediate reaction to Casey Jones was "is this some kinda fucking joke"?

Yeah, but they used to absolutely fucking rock. And, I'd argue, still do live.

Yeah at least I was saved that by not seeing shows til the 80s. Donna Jean is great on the albums (especially JGB ones, and "Cats" especially), but man she needed production and should not have sang with them live.
