Picking 1982 as the cutoff is just so arbitrary and bizarre. If he had said 1977, 1989, or 1990, he might have had at least an arguable point. But 1982? WTF.

Benny is sundowning right before our eyes. Sad!

OK, if the original post alone shouldnt have been in the Music forum this subjective and never ending debate definitely should be.

I said 95 for a rock solid reason. The Grateful Dead have not performed nor made a record since Jerry died, their INC not withstanding.

BTW, where is this gear? When I click on "Shop" I see a few items, but no larger store and no GD gear.

Yeah, I had trouble finding it at first, too. I kept going through the menus on the main site home page and it finally showed up. Sorry, I know that’s not much help...

When did the Grateful Dead jump the shark? Hmm. I'm a gonna go with 1987- that's the first time I went to a show and thought "meh." And the last album of good songs (hey I like the albums) was In the Dark in 1987. I did see them a few more times through 1990 but it seemed like the scene overwhelmed the music by the late 80s.

But yeah it's all personal- if I was hanging with them in the Haight I'd probably say some time in the late 70s; if I didn't get to see them til the 90s I'm sure I would have loved it then. I still rock a Jerry hand on my skis though- no such thing as a former Deadhead if you really were one to begin with!

    fify

The grateful dead never jumped the shark, but I did get a little down on the faux deadheads towards the end.

thanks. I found it after a while. But of course it's nowhere to be found when you click on "shop" from the home page. Someone needs to prop open the server closet door, I think it's getting a little warm in there.

that's what made me retire in 1990. As an example, I got sick of the deadheads shoplifting in the convenience while at the same time viewing the convenience store clerk as being less enlightened than they were.

I think it is funny that one of the tee shirts has a picture of what looks like El Cap with the word “Teton” on it.

The one thing I liked was the lightning bolt corded cap, which is naturally sold out.

I found myself at the last 2 Dead shows ever at the world famous Richfield Coliseum - front row nonetheless right in front of Jerry as a young lad (my tennis coach was a massive fan, his brother was head of security, and we had the kind in those days), apparently a favorite venue of the band, situated on the west rim of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park...

and no way I could find the merch this thread was about until someone posted a link.

Danno's right. New Andrew sucks at his job.

The only era that definitively sucked was the Vince days. Saw them with Brent, Hornsby and Vince and Vince truly brought them down a notch. One could draw a lot of parallels between the Dead and TGR.
