You nailed it on the head. This is has been my gripe since I saw the trailer. It looks like it may as well be interchangeable with any crappy superhero movie released in the last 10 years. In short, if the movie is anything like the trailer, it'll suck.
The David Lynch version takes a lot of heat, but it at least captures the pure fucking weirdness of the book.

Agreed. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Lynch version. Plus Toto? Hell yeah.
That said, Villeneuve is awesome, as is the cast he picked, along with the score composer, etc. etc. I think we'll be in good hands with this one.
But yeah, whoever directed that trailer needs to be fired. "BWAAAAAAA!" DJSapp nailed it.

Broke down and watched the trailer. I was a bit worried what with all the hyperbole on the Webz and comments here.
My takeaways:
1. I was seriously underwhelmed by the trailer.
2. I fail to see how it is Marvel-like; at least MCU trailers are flashy, loud, and somewhat exciting, if in a banal way. This trailer was kind of blah.
3. The music did not fit the trailer at all.
I am gonna give DV the benefit of the doubt as so far he is 6 for 7 in regards to the films of his I have seen (the only film of his I thought was crap was Prisoners, everything else I have seen--Maelstrom; Incendies; Enemy; Arrival; Sicario; Blade Runner 2049--has been stellar).
I am more worried about how/where I am going to see it as the prospect of visiting movie theaters still leaves me feeling sketchy and Dec will be smack dab in winter, so not sure about the drive-in experience...

This is heresy, but I thought Jupiter Ascending (getting rid of the actual plot) was closer to the scope of what Herbert was getting at. World trading, all of the royal houses bordering on insanity due to inbreeding, etc. Its bonkers.
Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.

I'm still hopefully optimistic but pink floyd in the mix isn't sitting right with me. Seems...off.

Pink Floyd fits in perfectly fine for me. Now, everyone wear damn masks so I can see this thing in theaters. Pretty please!

Looks like I have another 10 months in which to read the book...
The film has been pushed back to the fall of 2021:

Same, on both accounts. Floyd's song, on the surface, doesn't quite ratchet up the intensity, but if you take it for the meaning, it makes perfect sense. I thought it was a smart pick. Fitting for the time in which both the book and song released.
Bummer, but that's good. I started Dune a few months ago and my progress is slow. It's better now that I'm in it, but time to read both the first and second book is good by me.

Are the books past the first one worth the read?
Dune really is a weird book (in a good way).Originally Posted by blurred

I re-read first book just now and enjoyed it more than the first time. On to the second one now.
They don’t seem as weird as I remembered. Just damn good writing.
