I revisited David Lynch's Dune earlier this week.
I hadn't seen it since it was in the theaters.
Some of it holds up really well: the costumes, the practical effects, the production design, and the music.
Some of it doesnt: the editing, the fight scenes, the green screen FX.

Dune fans seem to hate lynch.
I actually like it.
And it’s only one movie.
That’s a long ass book. Hard to capture in less than three hours.. . .

Exactly - all those other people need to upgrade as well. The GoT black screen pushed me over the edge and and it's been good; went back and re-watched things that were semi-visible in the dark and the moon became full and everything was crystal clear. Not saying you need to cancel any ski trips or gear purchases but ..... when the opportunity presents itself, do not hesitate.

Part 2 coming later this year. In the meantime, a revisit to a key scene of part 1...

Finally got around to this since it's on Hulu.
It's ok, but gosh it feels like it would have been better served as a mini-series (maybe 8-12 hours). Too many characters and moments and explanation were glossed over."fuck off you asshat gaper shit for brains fucktard wanker." - Jesus Christ
"She was tossing her bean salad with the vigor of a Drunken Pop princess so I walked out of the corner and said.... "need a hand?"" - Odin
"everybody's got their hooks into you, fuck em....forge on motherfuckers, drag all those bitches across the goal line with you." - (not so) ill-advised strategy

If I had a dollar for every time capitalism was blamed for problems caused by the government I'd be a rich fat film maker in a baseball hat.

Indeed a high budget series (a la Game of Thrones) would have been rad, but don't forget that the 2nd installment comes out in a few months. Looking forward to that. But still, it's way too epic a story to even cram into a couple 2.5 hour chunks, so I hear ya.
That said, Dune was absolutely worth seeing on the big screen at a cinema with a rocking sound system. You FELT the flutter of the ornithopter wings as your guts got straight shook. MUCH better experience than streaming on Hulu. If watching at home with a legit home theater setup, then its worth watching on 4K Blu-Ray with its vastly superior Atmos/TrueHD audio track and HDR10/Dolby Vision visuals. That makes ALL the difference in the overall experience. The theater I first watched it at had a state of the art 4K laser projector and full blown Atmos setup. I walked outta there in a bit of a happy daze.

The audio made the movie. The music kept you on edge. The sound design was something you felt in your core. The harvester felt massive in every sense presented, and yet the worm was somehow even larger. The audio set the scale of things.
And this kind of audio only comes from speakers being driven hard enough to oppress small nations.Wait, how can we trust this guy^^^ He's clearly not DJSapp

Hahahaha. Yup!!! Well said! The sound design throughout the film was an absolute masterpiece. There's good reason that the team led by Doug Hemphill, Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Ron Bartlett helped the film nab Best Sound at the Oscars. Score by Hans Zimmer too of course, who also got an Oscar for Best Original Score. His style and Dune was a match made in Sci-Fi heaven. Don't get me wrong. I freaking LOVE the Toto score, but Zimmer's version just nailed it with a feel that I thought was more worthy of the books.

I believe y'all and get that it would have been better in the theater. That said, a movie isn't great it if is only great in the theater.

That's too bad, since theater's may soon be extinct.
Seems like with a good set of over the ear head phones, a similar effect might be achieved.

No. Not even close. The ear, though the primary auidotory organ, is only one part of the body that experiences sound and transmits it to the brain. When your whole skeleton is vibrating because between eight and sixteen 18" subwoofers are slowly deconstructing the building, that just creates a different emotional response.
I mean, I've seen a rocket launch on TV, so I know how powerful that is, right?Wait, how can we trust this guy^^^ He's clearly not DJSapp
