I still want to see the goddamn thing mounted (unevenly). Like, how uneven are we talking?

While you're at it, consider removing the wood paneling under the hearth and replacing with stone to match...it's just very odd to rest all this heavy stuff over something that is light; or non-combustible over combustible...

It's not a functional thing, just an odd visual story at your fireplace

also, regarding distance from hearth opening, for reference...

Good god, whatever your FIL did, just fill it in with some more brown grout. It will be fine.
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

He'll never get a good color match unless he removes all the grout and redoes it all.

Oh, and cleaning up after colored grout really sucks.

Here's the goddamn mantel. It's nearly centered, it's nearly level...just not perfect like I would have tried in my own home. Luckily, we've got an open floorplan, so I can see this goddamn thing from the kitchen, living room, office and dining room.

Don't worry, people will be so focused on the white leather couches and chair to ever notice that the mantel is too far to the right. I mean left.

The rug really pulls the room together though.

Center and level I could live with. It's that bare stone on the right side that would drive me bonkers.

Just hang a picture of your FIL over the bare spot and call it a day

    The goddamn mantel

Personally, I would tear off that stone and drywall over the smoky air polluting fireplace and make a media wall. Fireplace is big waste of space in a small room and inefficient heat source. Save on homeowners insurance too.

Sawzall the other side a few inches off to make it look centered. Then cover that lighter spot on the right side (and also on the left side after you shorten that side) to be closer to the color of the rest of the stone.

What's up with that tv stand? Thing looks like it's asking to be knocked over. And yeah the bare spot to the right of the mantel drives me crazy. Couch on the right looks like a solid 10/10 though. Looks like it has seen some solid napping action.
